Description:
This lodge takes the form of one of the largest and grandest of the London townhouses that bears the name of Britain's Duke of Devonshire. Devonshire House is inspired by classical Roman-Renaissance architecture and consists of a large, central building with three stories in eleven bays containing the principal rooms, state apartments and an entry, flanked by smaller service wings which form a three-sided courtyard.
A portico, entrance hall and grand staircase allow for formal entrance to be made into the ground floor where the "Crystal Staircase", named for its glass handrail and stair-posts, conveys guests directly to the principal hall which includes a vast heavily gilded ballroom and the Duke's formal sitting room which contains the best of his collection of engraved gems and Baroque medallions. Inconspicuous pairs of staircases are tucked into modest sites at either side, leading to the upstairs where the strictly private living quarters of the Cavendish family are located.
The curiously flat exterior conceals sumptuous interiors which house a large part of the Devonshire art collection, considered one of the finest in the United Kingdom and serves as the setting for the brilliant social and political life of the Lord Cavendish when he is in Britain. The Queen herself has attended the lavish fancy dress balls held at the estate.
Purpose-Built Edge
This Edge can only be chosen at Rank 1.
Many lodges are constructed inside pre-existing buildings, accommodating their needs to the shape and size of the structure. While this helps to mask the lodge’s true purpose, sometimes compromises have to be made that limit the lodge’s potential.
A purpose-built lodge, on the other hand, needs make no such compromises. it is constructed with its true role in mind, meaning the building is perfectly suited to its purpose.
A lodge with the Purpose-Built Edge has its Modifier increased by +1
