The Empyrean, The Aether, The Source of Magic

Magic has been around on Varda as long as there has been written history, and perhaps longer than that. Since time immemorial, it has existed and been used by the living beings of the world. Each of the Races and Cultures of Varda has its own ties to magic, using it in different ways, and having different laws applied to its use. It is not just the sapient beings that use it though, as many of the beasts and creatures of the land find themselves naturally tapping in to the magical energies.

Not all are blessed with such powers though, and it is rare that a spellcaster is found on Varda. Not all can feel the flow of magic, and fewer still can wield it efficiently. It is usually only with years of training that magic can be utilised, although every few centuries, someone is born with natural talent. There are other ways to gain the powers granted by magic, be it faith, a great Artifact or some darker means.

Mortelaten and Research in to Magical Energies

The first to research in to the nature of magic was the Grand Mage Mortelaten. With research that lasted years, Mortelaten theorised there was a world or plane that existed alongside the Material World. He named this plane "The Weave", a chaotic, ever-flowing fount of magic that ocassionaly touched upon the world of Varda. Those that could use magic could feel the flow of The Weave, and bend its powers to their will.

Mortalten's research and theories were preached all over Varda, with many agreeing with the Mage. Explanations for creatures, such as ghosts and elementals, were all thought to be as a result of The Weave reacting to particularly potent events and spells.
