The Kingdom of Mauritania

The Circular Nation

The nation of Mauritania is most known for its capital city, Atlantis, a great and wealthy centre for trade and culture, and this city has as its defining feature, its circular nature, although these circles have long since been expanded around. The nation is also known for its connection to the Maghreb Sea, and resulting speciality in fishing, and the fruitful agriculture present along the great Tamanrasett River.

Government

Their position along a single straight river, and the vast majority of their population living on this river or the lake it originates from, means that this nation has traditionally been ruled very directly. Despite their history of attempting to enforce the vassalage of surrounding peoples, their geographical constraints have often limited their success in these endeavors.   Their government consists of a single hereditary monarchy, decided by patrilineal inheritance, where the ruler is known as the king. The king governs the country with the help of advisors appointed by the king himself.   The king is the sole authority in this nation, leading them through times of great success when the kings were competent, as well as times of decline when the king was less so. Currently, they are enjoying the reign of a very successful monarch, King Atlas the one hundred and twenty-third, who has effectively repelled barbarian hordes from their borders and asserted their control and influence in the world as a West Saharan military and economic superpower. However, King Atlas is aging rapidly, and it won't be long before he passes away, leaving one of his many sons to ascend to the throne. Only time will tell if any of them will be able to live up to their father's legacy.

Territory

While their main territories are around the river and the lake, their influence often extends all the way to the Atlas Mountains in the north, named after one of their many kings named Atlas. Additionally, their reach extends south into the Saharan Savannah, where frequent clashes occur over territory with the many nomadic Saharan tribes. However, their influence extends to all borders of the lake, called the Maghrebi Sea, named such because of its immense size. They are able to take control of the entire body of water due to their position as the only major nation with naval capabilities and a water route to the lake.

History

The Mauritanian history is long and full of golden and dark ages. Their most notable historical event occurred many centuries, if not millennia ago, if memory lives that long.   It was during one of Mauritania's golden ages when they primarily followed Deiwos, may his reign fertilize our soil. At this time, a great cataclysm threatened to put an end to their capital city of Atlantis. A great earthquake shook the ground, destroying many buildings and breaking the landscape. The great city of Atlantis was under the threat of sinking beneath the waves. They called on their patron deity, Deiwos, but he did not answer, for neither the land nor the sea was his to command. As a last resort, the King of Mauritania, King Atlas, for whom all kings have been named since, declared that they would all pray to the lord of the sea, Tauqa, and thus they did.   As the city prayed, and as Tauqa heard their call for aid, he chose to show them mercy and aid them in this great time of need. By invoking his right as lord of the world's waters, he prevented the great city of Atlantis from sinking beneath the ocean. The Mauritanian kingdom was saved that day, and their people have prayed to Tauqa ever since.

Magic

The Mauritanians have long welcomed mages to their nation, seeing them as wise scholars, who can most certainly aid them and their nations, helping them to grow, which is why mages are welcomed here.   They even have a large magic section in the great library of Atlantis, where young mages are drawn towards, to learn about and perfect their craft.
