Old Atralic
The official language of the Atralum Empire, it serves as a base for nearly every language that has come after it. Spoken for thousands of years across a vast area of land, it developed many dialects, variations and spoken versions. Many of these versions are distinct and almost incomprehensible to speakers of a different dialect. Some similarities persist through many of the language offshoots. For example female names often end with ia and male names with er.
The origin of language is currently unknown. There are many theories, however. Some think they derived it from an even older language, some think it was a gift from the gods.
The area that is now the Queendom of Vreabia was on the fringes of the empire and its language was already quite different before over five hundred years of isolation. Now it bears very little resemblance. Certain words and phrases have persisted which a keen scholar of the languages can see.
The original Atralic language is full of shortened and more guttural sounds. In its base form, people considered it quite harsh sounding, making the users sound angry or aggressive. Later dialects smoothed out these sounds and a few even made it sound almost musical. People put these sweeping changes down to the large-scale conquering that the empire did, combining their language with the subjugated peoples.
With the collapse of the Atralum Empire, Old Atralic is becoming more and more rare with most of the nations trying to recapture their old ways and languages. Many consider their time in the empire little more than a national prison sentence that they wish to forget.
