The Black Wood

The Northern Forest

The great forest of the north is largely made up of pine trees, which are more resistant to the cold temperatures here than broad-leaf trees. In the summer this forest is a lively place, full of colour and many animals scurrying about looking for their next meal, but during the winter, the whole forest is covered in a layer of snow, and only those who are unable to hibernate of migrate away during the winter, are still found awake.

Flora and Fauna

A number of different types of pines grow here in patches, competing for space. The wildlife is also numerous here, with moose being the most common grazer here, along with the occasional bison who This forest holds a significant place in human history as it is situated close to the original human homeland in the north. The plains where humanity started were scarce in resources, but this forest offered an abundance of huntable game and a variety of nuts and berries. As a result, it became the first heart of human civilization. Even today, this forest has some of the oldest human settlements, ancient cities, and forgotten burial sites that are considered sacred in various religions, including the one followed by the Dendorians. The Dendorians fight fiercely to control this forest, even against stronger and more numerous opponents, because of its religious significance.

Geography

Although the Trees and animals see this forest as a single continuous entity, Humans and dwarves have divided it into three sub-regions, The first of which is the westernmost region, which is the region under the control of the dwarven Kingdom of Cordyan. It is sparsely populated and home to many dangerous beasts. The second of these regions is the central region, which is the most populated of the four sub-regions, and is shared between the nations of Dendor and Westingham. For Dendor this region also represents their primary hunting and living ground which is why it holds extra importance. It is quite rainy in the summer, which is why it also has many rivers and several lakes, which add to its character as a region easily traversed by boat.  The third region is in the far east. this region cannot be connected to the rest of dendor by river, and has therefore developed its own character, instead being more connected to the sea of a thousand isles, and its people.

They encountered the ancient beasts that dwelled there and felt the presence of the trees, from which they learned valuable lessons about the world that have been long forgotten now.
