Dverren

The Dverren are a distinct race found only in Talmain, although they may have existed on Earth at one time.   It is believed they may have evolved from early humans. They were originally cave-dwellers, and developed specicific adaptations that helped them to thrive in this enviroment. They are typically short in stature, powerfully built with broad chests and shoulders and immensely strong arms. They have large, cat-like eyes which enable them to see well in the dark.   These adaptations helped them to dig out and extend the cave systems where they lived. They are geological experts and became miners of mineral deposits and metal ores. They are legendary smiths, using words of Power in their forging which makes their tools and weapons almost unbreakable and very desirable. Their skills are sought after throughout Talmain.   Though many of them now live in villages above ground, they retain their links to mountains and cave systems, preferring to live close to their mines. A few Dverren folk moved to human cities, earning a good living as blacksmiths, but mostly the Dverren prefer to keep to themselves and are distrustful of humans.   Much like humans, Dverren society was once based around hunting and gathering food, but they learned to farm the lands around their mines, growing crops and keeping livestock.   Groups of Dverren are found throughout Talmain. They share a common language, though there are regional variations that means far flung communities may find it difficult to understand each other.
