Rafel Mendoz
Best friend of Cale Coilltear.
Born in Erea, Rafel is the last surviving member of his family. His parents were killed by Darthian soldiers during Darthia’s brutal annexation of Erea. Rafel’s oldest brother, Amid, took charge of the family after their parent’s death. The four children – Amid, Dinez, Rafel and Thulia – fled across the border into Casalonia to escape the Darthian invasion. They settled in Beldane, living rough on the streets to start with and then in a shanty house on the Warrens, the slum area outside Beldane’s city walls.
Rafel became leader of the River Street Gang, a loose affiliation of street children, many of them pickpockets and thieves. The gang broke up as they reached adulthood, but he still has many close ties with the ex-members.
Tragedy struck again when Rafel was fifteen. He and Cale had gone on a hunting trip into the Red Mountains, bringing back a haul of marmot skins which they planned to sell. They returned to find the Warrens up in smoke. Dozens of slum-dwellers, many of them children, had been slaughtered by Darthian raiders. Rafel’s brother Amid, and his sisters, Dinez and Thulia, were among the victims.
Rafel is normally easy-going and cheerful, but something changed in him that day. He harbours a burning hatred of the Darthian soldiers, known as Jacks (short for Jackdaws, due to their black and grey uniforms).
Along with Cale, he joined the Casalonian army shortly after burying his family. He was an expert bowman and was assigned into a unit of bowmen, fighting in several campaigns until he lost the sight in one eye after a Darthian sword-strike and was invalided out of his unit.
He now works in Beldane labouring or doing odd jobs but has been considering rejoining the army as a foot soldier. He’s a street-brawler, an expert trapper and tracker, and he’s deeply in love with Dainne Coilltear, Cale’s sister.
