Summary
Along the southern border, there is an old wives tale surrounding the the Whispering Gultch, a vast canyon that cuts across Theatrum like a scar. The tale goes as follows...
A young man named Thidrik, was caught in a treasonous act against his provinces Warlord. As punishment, he was sent to the Gulch and given an impossible choice, to climb to the bottom of the gulch using a single rope, or to jump, and meet a quicker end to his fate. Thidrik chose to climb and spent hours of grueling pain, climbing down to the bottom of the canyon where he waited until nightfall.
Unknown to his judges, Thidrik and his young wife, had created an escape plan. He instructed her to wait until dark, come to the Gulch, and lower some ropes into it so that the two of them may run away together. Thidrik said, "I will sing and whistle to you all through the night, so that you may find me and we may leave before light." The first night, Thidrik sang of love and romance, but his wife did not come for him. On the second day, Thidrik For three nights, the man sang and whistled, but his love did not come.
The tale is accompanied by a whistling song as well as a warning. Never approach the Whispering Gulch after dark, for the hollow song of the young man may lure you to join him in the cavern below." Those who are extra superstitious further advise against whistling the song of the
Historical Basis
The Gulch has been used for the punishment of traitors, murderers, and thieves for a long span of time. There are plenty of records of men being sentenced to death for conspiring against a governing official, however the one with the most historical basis is the attempt of murder of Seimon Bengriff by his sister's husband Dyfan Tanner. Seimon's sister was never seen after her husband was sentenced to the Gulch so it is rumored that she joined him there late in the night.

This story is very important among the peoples of Mahtaromenel, as it provides a ghostly tale to drive children and young adults away from the Gulch late at night.
In Literature
This wives tale is documented in a book of poems written by a Menelion Scholar. Told from the perspective of the young man, it details his heartbreaking confidence in his loves return, as it diminishes night by night. He continues wish for her swift return, but the echo of his broken voice is all that remains.
