Gathering on Discord

Click here to join our Discord server. Discord is a chat website where you can type to each other in groups. It's free but you'll need an email address to sign up. It's open 24/7. Say hello in the #chat-and-questions channel.

What is Discord?

Discord is a voice, video, and text chat app where you can type to each other privately, and also in groups. It's free to use but you will need an email address to sign up. You can use a pseudonym, a character name, or your real name: the shorter, the better.

Do I need special software?

No. You can sign into it using a normal browser. It does have an app that you can click here to download if you like, but you don't have to use that.

How do I find The Broad Cloth server?

Click here and accept the invitation that pops up which will bring you straight to the welcome part of our server. On the left of your screen you should find a list of channels, and you're looking for one called #chat-and-questions. Click on that name and type a hello to us. If anyone is online, they will pop up and say hello.

What happens on Discord?

People chat about the project in general, and about specific events or aspects of the project. Some of us also play characters in a text-based way, and talk about those characters. If you haven't roleplayed before, it's fairly easy to pick up how, and we're happy to help out. Click here for the basics and then chat to us online. It's not all text-based. We can also audio chat on Discord, as characters or just as ourselves.

What are the video events?

Sometimes we have live performance events by video, on Discord or Zoom. These are often where you can see characters interacting, and you can chat to them too, just as yourself or as your own character. You can click here to sign up to the e-newsletter to get info about future live events, both digital and in person.

I don't want to play a character

That's fine. You're welcome to talk about a character without playing them, or to come and chat to us about the project in general. You might find others from your island, and you might also find people from around the world.   It's also fine to just hang out and watch others play characters and chat. Bear in mind that, if you do this over time, you may develop a familiarity with people who are active there, but they will not be able to develop a familiarity with you. If you then meet them at a video or live event, they might find your sense of familiarity a little uncomfortable.   This can be mitigated in various ways. Even a little online interaction on a regular basis will help people feel like you're not a total stranger. When you meet someone in person, sharing some information about yourself and your interest in the project can help, too.
