Personal history

Aveline is the daughter of a chevalier named Benoit du Lac, who fled from Orlais to Ferelden after losing his patron to assassination. Raising her on stories of knights and adventures, he hoped Aveline would be a knight, even naming her after Ser Aveline, the Knight of Orlais. He eventually sold everything he had to sponsor her into King Cailan Theirin's service. Aveline met and married Wesley Vallen while in the Fereldan army, where she was an officer. Loghain Mac Tir's betrayal at the Battle of Ostagar forced them to flee the darkspawn horde. She ordered a scattered retreat and told her people to make their way home. She and Wesley eventually made their way to Lothering's outskirts, where they met the Hawke Twins and their family. Garrett Hawke and Marian Hawke saved Aveline and Wesley from imminent death while escaping Lothering. When Flemeth indicated Wesley would die of the darkspawn taint, Wesley begged his wife to kill him, rather than let him become that which they had been fighting. Marian offered to kill Wesley to save Aveline the pain of doing so, but Garrett stepped in and insisted that the decision and action should be Aveline's alone. Aveline chose to honor her husband's wishes, staying with Wesley until the end. His death left her with few options, and she joined the Hawke Twins and their family on their trip to Kirkwall. Upon arriving at Kirkwall, the group found the guards must be bribed in order for them to enter the city. Gamlen Amell, uncle to the Hawke family, provided contacts who could help them, in exchange for mercenary services from the Hawkes through the next year. With no other options, Aveline assists the Hawkes in entering the city. After entering the city, Aveline joined the Kirkwall City Guard to make a living. Working with Garrett Hawke, Aveline uncovered a conspiracy involving Jeven, the former Captain of the City Guard, and the Coterie. They discovered that Jeven had been sending guardsmen on dangerous patrols with a satchel of valuable city information in order to sacrifice them to the Coterie so that the thieves could obtain the information without looking suspicious. When Jeven's scheme was revealed to the authorities, Jeven was arrested by his own guardsmen and Aveline replaced him as the new Captain of the Guard. Over the next few years, Aveline found that the guard force was spread thin, and the templars were unwilling to requisition a few of their men to fight for the city guard, as it was considered 'demeaning.' Even so, many of the guardsmen rallied under her leadership. Prior to the First Battle of Kirkwall, Aveline enlisted the aid of the Hawke Twins in trying to arrest two fugitive elves who murdered a city guardsman for raping their sister, but had been granted religious sanctuary in the Qunari Compound for converting to the Qun. The Arishok took offense to the attempted arrest of his new converts and counterattacked, marshaling his forces to conquer the city and convert it to the Qun. Aveline fought alongside the Hawke Twins to defeat the Arishok and the Qunari invaders. Aveline encountered former Guard-Captain Jeven again in 9:35 Dragon, where he had taken up with base types who held prejudiced views against Fereldans like Aveline and the Hawke Twins. He became the leader of a dangerous group of insurgents who attempted to have Aveline expelled by forcing anonymous complaints that she was coddling her men. Jeven even attempted to coax guards into joining his cause. The scheme backfired when Aveline confronted him in the sewers of Kirkwall. He was killed after attacking Aveline. All in all, Aveline confided in her friend Garrett that she was proud of the work she had down to reform the Kirkwall City Guard, and she was thankful to him for all of his help. Her relationship with Marian was never more than a pleasant professionalism, as the two didn't quite see eye-to-eye on many things. Garrett, on the other hand, was instrumental in getting Aveline and her second husband, Guardsman Donnic Hendyr, to realize their feelings for each other, and helped them come together. Aveline and Donnic were married at the Hawke Estate in 9:36 Dragon. As of 9:44 Dragon, Aveline is still Guard-Captain of the Kirkwall City Guard. Through her friend, Varric Tethras,she was in frequent communication with the Inquisition.
