Personal history

Once a slave of a Tevinter Magister named Danarius, Fenris is covered in a series of lyrium-infused markings, which grant him the unnatural ability to phase through solid objects. This ability is somehow connected to the Fade. Fenris often uses this ability as a weapon, phasing through individuals and solidifying, killing them instantly. However, these markings are also extremely sensitive, and touching them often results in physical discomfort. Because of this - and possibly other reasons - he has an aversion toward being touched.   However, the experiments performed on him also caused him to lose all of his memories. He fled to Kirkwall as a fugitive, hunted by the soldiers of his former master.   Fenris met Garrett Hawke and Marian Hawke in 9:31 Dragon, when he paid a surface dwarf named Anso to hire mercenaries to lure his former master's bounty hunters out in the open. He enlisted the help of the Hawke Twins to clear out Danarius' mansion in Hightown so he could confront him. Yet to Fenris' disappointment, Danarius was not there. He directed the twins to the spoils of their battle, and offered his services as payment for their aid, joining up with them.   Garrett Hawke made several trips to Fenris' mansion to enlist his aid, and slowly but surely, Fenris' distrust of the mage eased.   One day, when Fenris and the Hawke twins were on a mission outside of Kirkwall, Tevinter slavers sent by Danarius' apprentice, Hadriana, attempted to recapture him. Fenris asked them to come with him to confront Hadriana in an abandoned slavers' den, and after some hesitation on Marian's part, the two agreed, and they traveled to the cave.   Inside the cave, they found an escaped slave girl by the name of Orana - Marian wanted to pay the girl and set her free, but Fenris insisted that she would be robbed and potentially killed, since she had no sense of the world at large. Garrett came up with a compromise, where the Hawke family hired Orana as a paid servant for their mansion. As they moved through the cave, they found Hadriana, who attacked them on sight. When they defeated her, she attempted to barter information on Fenris' sister in exchange for her life. Fenris refused, killing Hadriana the second she gave up his sister's name.   When Garrett returned home from the mission, he found Fenris waiting outside. The two talked at length, and that night began a romantic relationship.   During a meeting with the Arishok of the Qunari compound, Fenris demonstrated considerable knowledge of Qunari culture and practices - a result of being left behind by his master after a battle between the Tevinter mages and the Qunari on Seheron. His injuries were treated by Fog Warriors and he spent several months living with them before Danarius returned to retrieve Fenris. The Fog Warriors refused to give him up, and Danarius was injured in the subsequent battle. Danarius ordered Fenris to kill the Fog Warriors who had defended him, which he did. He still feels a great deal of regret at doing so. It was this event that caused Fenris to leave his master, taking advantage of the delay in pursuit that Danarius's injuries offered.   In 9:36 Dragon, Fenris told Garrett that he had obtained information about his sister, and wanted Garrett to go with him to meet her. They met Varania the Hanged Man, and after talking for a few moments, Danarius appeared, revealing the set-up. Danarius had managed to make Varania his apprentice in exchange for baiting Fenris. Fenris killed his former master, with the assistance of Garrett. After, Fenris tried to kill his sister, but was unable to do so. Varania revealed that Fenris competed to obtain his lyrium markings, and used a boon in order to free her and their mother from slavery. She says, however, that she resents her freedom, as she was unable to cope with the hardships that came with it. She then left the Hanged Man.   Following the death of Garrett's mother, Fenris spent a great deal of time with him, helping him heal. This strengthened the relationship between the two.   Fenris fought alongside the Hawke Twins in defense of the Circle mages after the Destruction of the Kirkwall Chantry.   Following the outbreak of the Mage-Templar War, Fenris and Garrett traveled the continent killing Tevivnter slavers that were preying on refugees.   After Garrett's disappearance in the Fade, Fenris' whereabouts are unknown. However, rumors of a ruthless mage hunter with lyrium tattoos known as the Blue Wraith have spread throughout Thedas.
