Cumberland
Cumberland is an influential port city in the nation of Nevarra. Standing on the shores of the Waking Sea and straddling the River Cumber, Cumberland is the natural port through which the greater bulk of the goods passing to and from the Free Marches flows. Almost anything can be bought and sold on the streets of Cumberland if you know where to look.
The city is large enough to supposedly fit three Denerims in its borders.
Government
As a part of Nevarra, it is officially under the jurisdiction of Nevarra's leader, the Chantry's Divine. Currently, this position is held by Divine Justinia V. Local jurisdiction of the city is held by a Duke or Duchess. The current Duke of Cumberland is Sandral Anaxas.
Defences
Armed guards stand watch outside of the wealthy districts of the city and inhabitants and visitors are therefore not allowed to walk about armed. Those who appear uncouth or of low standing are looked upon with disdain.
Industry & Trade
In Cumberland, a surface dwarf trade enclave known as the "Dragon's Den" can be found. It's a walled-off area with an open floor-space of several blocks. It's found adjacent to the wealthy human neighborhoods. All the enclave's buildings are made of stone and designed in the dwarven architecture style. A prominent inn, the Diamond Lass, is found in the Dragon's Den. Drinks here are served in crystal goblets.
Assets
Cumberland is home to the College of Magi which is massive, elaborately designed structure featuring a spired golden dome called the Sun Dome. Once the palatial home of a Duchess, it is here that each Circle's First Enchanters gather to elect the Grand Enchanter, their representative to the Chantry and their chief adviser on all matters magical.
Architecture
The roads of Cumberland are paved with well-chosen cobblestones, most worn smooth from the passage of countless feet. The streets are lined with well-made three-story buildings, scores of which are decorated with ornate facades. While some of the streets are narrow, especially those in the older portions of the city, most are spacious, the better to accommodate the passage of laden carts.
The Nevarran custom of venerating their heroic ancestors is most obviously expressed in Cumberland in the statues that fill the city’s open, airy courtyards. Most have been carved with great skill.
Nevarrans are also a deeply religious people. Banners fly out from windows of residences as well as roofs of tall buildings, usually depicting the symbol of the Chantry or perhaps some iconic scene from the Chant of Light.
