Hedge magic
Hedge magic is a derogatory term created by the Chantry which relates to the forms of magical expression different than that of typical mages. Hedge mages are untrained magic-users who wield powers developed outside of conventional teaching. Some of these hedge mages are not even aware of their nature until they are put into hyper-stressful situations. Undeveloped, their abilities can express themselves in a variety of ways, which the hedge mage might attribute to faith, or will, or to another being entirely.
Hedge mages and "witches" are not necessarily synonymous with maleficarum. Often, though, their abilities instead lie close to the border with the use of charms, curses, and alteration of one's form. These powers are seldom able to be replicated through Circle magic.
Hedge mages live chaotic lives, and are frequently lured into darkness, temptation, and sometimes even insanity. Their lives are often short as a result of either their wild talent, or those around them fearing them and killing them. Common examples of hedge mages are the so-called "witches" of the Chasind Wilders and the "shamans" of the Avvar barbarians.
