Silent Plains
The Silent Plains are a desolate area on the southern borders of the Tevinter Imperium with Nevarra laying further south and the Free Marches to the south-east. The Imperial Highway crosses the Plains.
History
The Silent Plains is best known for being the site where the longest, hardest, and bloodiest battles occurred during the First Exalted March, between the Andrastian army and the Tevinter Imperium. These titanic battles brought together forces whose origins scattered from all across Thedas.
What may have once been a beautiful and lush plains is no more. Instead, the plains are now a gray, wind-blasted wasteland filled with dust, fine as ash, dotted by rocky terrain. It is believed that, from the sheer amount of deaths that occurred in this geographic location, the land was corrupted and that no plant would grow there for more than a thousand years. While mostly true, the rare felidicus aria, commonly known as the Silent Plains Rose, has been able to grow here. It is one of the only plant-life able to exist here.
It's truly quite dangerous to delve deeper than a surface-level exploration of the border lands. Tales spun by those who live not too far from the Plains seem to suggest that there is an abundance of ghasts, ceaseless, and wyverns stalking the area for those brave enough to enter. This alone has kept most people away.
Occasionally, some bold historians have delved further north. What knowledge has become public suggests that they found ruins of cities and settlements quite abundantly. It is unclear if these were destroyed when the Tevinter Imperium disappeared, if these were destroyed during the First Exalted March, or if perhaps they were destroyed when the Tevinter Imperium stretched its borders when it was first growing. These historians also found signs of what they imagined were slaves fleeing from the Imperium, but most of that is speculation. These researchers continued by hypothesizing that Hasmal, a Free Marcher city on the edge of the Plains, may have been the end of a long, secret trail which existed to help slaves escape.
Regardless of everything, the idea of the secrets that could be pillaged from these lands is enough to make treasure hunters drool. However, the sight of powerful undead makes them think twice about the risk.
