The Pit Flame
The Pit of Flame is a microcosm of Phlegethos and Hell as a whole. It's a place of both pain and pleasure, where the lines between the two are blurred. This volcanic center is a massive lake of boiling filth that erupts with columns of white flame hundreds of feet high. While most Devils are immune to fire, the Pit's flames are a unique form of hellfire that inflicts unimaginable torment even on them.
Suspended above the flames are iron balls containing imprisoned devils. Maintaining these prisons is a shared responsibility of all archdevils, who pay a subscription to use this form of punishment. Osyluths, except for pit fiends, can condemn disobedient devils to the Pit of Flame. Devils of all ranks may also voluntarily subject themselves to this torment, seeking to prove their resilience, gain mental strength, or redeem themselves. Some even find a twisted pleasure in the pain.
Barbazus operate the beams that hold the prisoners. Bribes can influence the length of a devil's imprisonment. Thousands of cornugons, another type of devil, ensure that no prisoner escapes. The Pit of Flame is used as a tool for promotion and demotion, with some devils gaining greater power while others are reduced to lesser beings.
