Mortal Life

In a forlorn swamp in the middle of Rhan Daan, in the southern stretches of Kraac Glang, two goblins lived off of the land, scraping by on what few fish or amphibians they could catch. When one fell pregnant, they thought themselves blessed. When she gave birth, the parents were suprised to see only one child, in place of the small litter they had expected. And they were even more surprised that their child had an extra arm and leg, extra toes, and an extra eye.

While they had considered throwing the mutated child into the swamp as an offering to the spirits, they eventually decided to keep him, and would love him as much as a whole litter of whelps.

As Nuschin (derivative of the words warped, twisted, or grown) grew, his magic started showing. The sluggish waters of his home yielded greater bounty, and the many parasites that made their home there simply passed him by. His parents were not so lucky. They took sick, and slowly withered away before his eyes.

When they passed, Nuschin moved on, walking among other small villages in Kraac Glang, among the lizardfolk tribes to the south, and even into Edhel Bardor and up into Edeir. Everywhere he went, disease followed, and with every sick person he grew a bit stronger. Insects flocked behind him in great swarms, doing their own damage to the people around him.

Exactly where and when he roamed Therenia is contested, but there are some scholars who believe it is Nuschin who was responsible for the virulent plague that struck serveral tribes of Eastern Denuterra, including Kerah's people (circa 2 BEU). Nuschin, true to form, has neither confirmed nor denied any connection.

But for all that he wrapped cruelty around him like a blanket, the Stagnant Shadow did know mercy. He took pity on those with mutations, or who were born deformed. They inevitably avoided contracting the diseased that followed Nuschin, and he would even take the time to cure them of any other diseases they might contract. Their families, like Nuschin's, were not so lucky.

In time, word of both his power and his generosity towards some began drawing him an entourage. Those who were mutilated, deformed, or diseased found comfort at his side. Alchemists wishing for a greater understanding of pestilence and druids connected to blight and rot sought him out for power or knowledge.
