Mephistopheles originated as the consciousness of Hell itself, predating Bel's discovery of the plane. When Bel, Crowley and Astaroth entered Hell following their leave of the abyss meeting their older brother. His true origin and birth is unknown to even them, but as the lord of hell he lines the border of hell. Making way for contracts for new souls to work his engine.
