The Blooded

Though not technically a race in and of itself, "the blooded" is an umbrella term to describe individuals whose heritage is mixed with a creature typically referred to as a "monster." In the world of Theros, where magic is plentiful and where there are many less than scrupulous scientist are eager to experiment with magic and genetics, uncommon, mixed races do exist, albeit, they are a rarity.   Some of the Blooded were born as they are because they have a creature from another plane in their ancestry, or their mother was close to a portal to another plane while pregnant with them, or they may even be the result of more conventional coupling between a person and a monstrous creature. In truth, the why is not entirely understood, but individuals with extra planar influences exist in Anestor. This includes genasi, who carry elemental influences, tieflings, who've inherited hellish traits, or aasimar, whose blood is sthared with the angels. Before the Marcisians arrived in Anestor, these strange people were not seen as monsters at all. They were celebrated as being touched by the old gods. Those who still worship the old gods still see the Blooded as good omens. The Marcisians, however, did not share that sentiment. They did not see the Blooded as blessings at all, but rather as alien invaders and monsters. Like the Beastfolk, the Blooded were hunted mercilessly by the Marcisians, but they were not killed. They were taken across the sea.   Not all blooded come from extra planar creatures, however. Over the years, wizards and mad scientist alike used their powers to blend creatures that were never compatible. Gargoyles, morlocks, dragons, ogres were all spliced with people in chilling experiments. Some lived out their lives in slavery, but others freed themselves, and roam the world.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Blooded are as varied anatomically as their ancestors. A half dragon may have scales, horns and a tail, whereas a half vampire may have pale skin, fangs and an aversion to sunlight. A half giant would be much taller than their human relatives, and a half angel could be born with sparkling skin and wings.

Playing a Blooded Character

  • To choose the Highest, Second-Highest, and Third Highest ability, look at the origin species. If two are tied, choose one for each of the slots.

  • For focuses, you find the ability that matches the result of the roll and select one of that ability's focuses. If that ability doesn't have any focuses, then you can choose a different focus possessed by the origin race. Weapon groups awarded by the origin are also selecte base on which weapon groups your origin race has. If it doesn't have any weapon group, then take a weapon group that includes one of the weapons the origin race uses.

  • Add 1 to your ability that is the same as your origins highest ability.

  • Your speed is 10+ dexterity (minus armor penalty if applicable)

  • You can speak and read the common tongue of your homeland, and the language of your origin. If your origin doesn't have a language, then you have the common tongue only.

  • Roll twice on the Blooded Table for an additional benefit. Roll 2d6 and add the dice together.
