Cross of Blue Iridium

Military award given by the Hyperion Federation military.
The Cross of Blue Iridium is considered by many to be the highest honor the HF can bestow upon a soldier. It is given for extreme courage, selflessness and honor in times where duty calls. It is given to a single soldier once a year so it is extremely rare to find a soldier with a Cross of Blue Iridium. The medal itself is comprised of primarily iridium that has been extremely well polished.
It is hand crafted, but Replicator nanobots ensure it is perfect down to the atomic scale and its slight blue colouration is a result of a specific cleaning device used to clean the item. This blue colour has become known as a part of the award though, so that has primarily become a process to add the blue colour than to clean it. It is also constructed to withstand a powerful force that would otherwise destroy it. It can be awarded to a living person or posthumously. It is considered unfair to deny one the award because of this factor, but it is often awarded to people who end up being killed in acts of heroism.A large ceremony is held each year as the award is being assigned. This often involves high ranking individuals such as war-engineers and very skilled pioneeers.
