The Integrity Field Generator (IFG) is a special kind of strange technology which strengthens molecular bonds. It does this in a strange way, by adding a plasma to the armour near the generator that interacts with bonds. Any weapon that hits the armour must first take the plasma away from the chemical bonds before they can damage the bonds themselves. It is a rather strange method of defence, but one that works.
It does also increase the effective mass of the armour, so they are typically only turned on when in or soon to be in battle. It is typically used in almost all KC military starships, but can also be used as megastructure supports or just materials with high strength in general. However a starship designed to use them needs to specifically accommodate them as they can determine the shape of a hull with the spherical range of influence of the machines, and the machines themselves present a weak spot that if destroyed stop providing coverage.
