1001 Nights variant: re-rolls
Game rules - homebrew
This isn't a fixed thing I always want to include but something I want to playtest with players that might like the background in general but still have trouble with the religious element, specfically to allow people to choose to access the religion as much as they want, if they want it.
If a PC takes action beyond just praying that benefits civilisation in line with any of the Icons' spheres of influence then the PC gains a point of 'Favour'. This could be taking care of underprivileged children, helping out at a hospital, delivering food to the elderly, volunteering as a judicar, anything that takes some time and effort that brings benefit to civilisation. Favour has a maximum of 3, as if you're blatantly storing it up to use later then you can't really pass off your acts as being for the benefit of others. Re-rolls can be had by spending Favour or DP
The Darkness expects the PCs to prove their worth but does acknowledge good deeds done in advance: a successful re-roll can be paid for with 1 Favour or by giving the GM 1 DP, player's choice if they have Favour to spend. With Favour spends you get +1 to your reroll and don't have to match the skill or circumstances to a particular Icon (you still can for role-playing purposes). JUMP TO CONTENTS
For the hardline atheist Zenithians and anyone else that doesn't want to call on the Icons, there is the option of taking a point of Shock damage to gain a re-roll. Since Shock doesn't automatically clear like Stress, this can be a heavy burden, especially as it further marks you out as an atheist outsider in a religious community, but it works. In this case the Darkness is impressed by you reducing your ability to resist its horrors and accepts that your challenge has already increased: Once per encounter, re-roll at +1 dice on any skill (not having to match to an Icon or circumstance) and take 1 Shock damage.
