Ghodar desert tribes
Xinghur peoples of the Ghodar dessert
Tribes of Xinghur populate the middle desert south of the Nekatra Mountains on Ghodar. Though not isolationist they have always remained a purposefully distant people, cold in their dealings with even the colonists of Juldizin Demalisi, with whom tensions are lately pushing ever closer to outright hostility.
The tribes have always been prepared to conduct trade with both Juldizin Demalisi and with off-worlders but seemingly only on their own terms. In the past they would bring their caravans to the city's edge and accepted traders coming out to their oases and dedicated meeting spots, but they have never been happy when anyone wanted to head out to other places in the desert. The tribesfolk have never tried to openly stop such ventures but always try to disuade people from undertaking them. Few have seen tribal settlements
Most people assume the Xinghur are completely nomadic but artefact hunters have always claimed that the tribes have set themselves up in the best desert locations and are hoarding the planet's wonders for themselves. Certainly there have been clashes at ruin sites but no-one has truly negotiated through the details of it all. JUMP TO CONTENTS
All the tribes are highly traditional, maintaining a strong ritual to most parts of daily life and respecting all the old ways. They are offensively polite and seem to take offence at any breach of etiquette and civility. They always quickly move to cover over any perceived transgression however, with a quiet frustration, as if they simply can't expect better from outsiders. Their bearing in general gives them an air of superiority therefore, that only adds to the tension between the tribes and anyone with whom they have dealings. Awareness of the Faceless One
Despite limited connection with the Horizon at large for centuries and a refusal to be influenced by even the colonists, the tribes acknowledge the Faceless One. Reasonable folk realise that the Xinghur don't pay it any unhealthy extra respect but it is notable that the Faceless One is not a part of the old ways. Favour technology over beasts of burden
Most large-scale desert operations have to rely on dromedon to some degree for the simple practical reasons that the beasts are often cheaper and don't have anything like the maintenance trouble of machinery. However, the desert tribes have never been seen using dromedon, somehow managing to afford completely mechanised caravans - another point of tension with outsiders, if one through plain jealousy. Domesticated teraccas
The only beasts the tribes make use of are teraccas, small desert raptors, but whether for companionship or practical purpose is unknown. JUMP TO CONTENTS
Those that have found a rare Xinghur settlement can reliably return to it without trouble but when the desert folk are on the move they are almost impossible to find: scans struggle to locate them and even tracking them by eye can be difficult. They clearly possess some techology that allows them to hide materials and life signs from scanning, and that allows them to blend into the sand. Their large sand cloaks help explain some part of this but can only be the tip of the full truth. JUMP TO CONTENTS
