Rico Bizzaro's Flying Circus!
“Ships sink and islands cannot move, so I chose the sky. That way every man, woman, and child could get a taste of the world’s joys no matter where they lived!”
~ Rico Bizzaro
Rico Bizzaro’s Flying Circus is the name of both a skyship and a troupe of performers that travel the world through a sea of clouds, stopping from town to town to put on their shows for the locals. It is famous the world over as the world’s second largest skyship ever created at nearly 900 feet long and can comfortably maintain flight for months on end without need to land.
It was constructed through the magic of Rico Bizzaro, a then young Velucian man who was among the first non-easterner students accepted into the College of Arcane Metallurgy, in the year 4932NA, roughly 90 years ago. After spending nearly all of his family’s wealth on the necessary steel and materials he performed a feat of metallurgy the likes of which are seldom seen in history. It is said the spellwork took him several days to complete during which time he was tended to by his wife Weyen Bizzaro to ensure he did not succumb to the elements or die of thirst. When it was complete he had created one of the true wonders of the modern world. A tremendous flying ship capable of holding an audience of thousands and carrying it through the sky. Rico never used his magic again, but is famously quoted as saying, “The real magic is on the stage. I just built it.”
The vessel is built like a massive sailing ship with the masts and sails replaced by a large, dome-shaped amphitheater in the center. It boasts large fin-like wings on either side that rest against the ship’s sides and a dorsal fin in the back, shaping it almost like a massive fish. The ship’s exterior is mostly brass and silver giving it a distinct and eye catching appearance from below as it sails through the clouds and shimmers in the sun.
The dome in the center is where the stadium is. It can seat over 50,000 individuals at maximum capacity with plenty of room for the performers below. The stage has a myriad of automated features, allowing it to bring up rings and elevated platforms as needed by the performers. The below deck has fifteen floors filled with storage space and housing for the Bizzaro family and their many living performers and the ship’s crew. It had access to all the amenities one needs in a home including indoor plumbing, air conditioning, and areas to prepare and eat food. The ship’s deck is wide and open with hand rails for safety. When at lower elevations passengers can walk up on the deck for a breath of fresh air and to see the incredible sights below.
The shows are famous for their fantastical displays of automatons and living performers both demihuman and human. The acrobatics team boasts the truly highest flying jumps in the business and various living beasts are known to star in their own shows as well. Dancers, fire breathers, magicians, and all other form of entertainer can be found in Rico’s Flying Circus even today, long after Rico’s passing. The ship is now run by his great grandson, Chen Bizzaro, who owns a lucrative fleet of similar, albeit much smaller, airships that travel the world over bringing joy to people’s lives and building up the Bizzaro fortune his ancestor created.
Even with his many ships though, few illicit the same mixture of awe and sheer joy as seeing Rico’s original vessel pierce the clouds and descend from on high to whisk people away to a place of joy, laughter, and amazement.
