Soul Splintering

Souls are a fragile thing. While protected by one’s aura they can be damaged through spiritual attacks directed through the astral realm, and like all injuries may not always heal correctly. When this happens it results as a phenomenon called soul splintering.   Most commonly soul splintering is caused by attempts to remove astral parasites like spirit leeches from one’s soul without the proper precision. Less common, though often more severe, cases can be caused through actual spiritual attacks. Usually from a duel with a wizard or perhaps a run in with a powerful malignant spirit. When a soul splinters it can cause random bouts of depression in the non-magical, but in those who have fully a functioning astral presence it can be much worse. Potentially causing an inability to perform more complex spells depending on how severe it is, or even a loss of perceptiveness with one’s third eye.   For most of history soul splintering was just something one had to live with. There were ways to heal a damaged soul but none were very complete and most remedies were more esoteric than functional.   In the last century however, the method of soul stitching was invented. This is a unique spell in which one takes a small sliver of their own spiritual essence and transforms it into a metaphysical thread that is then woven into the other person’s soul. This binds the broken pieces back together and eventually takes place of any lost fragments that had faded away entirely. Thus the splintered soul is made whole again.   This procedure is very risky to the user however, as misuse of one’s own spiritual self can cause harm to the soul too. Thus it must be done with a steady heart and sharp mind so as not to splinter one’s own soul when creating the thread.
