Mental characteristics
Personal history
Max spent most of his professional life as an anthropologist/archaeologist specializing in the development of the Numabian tribes. As a "explorer", he is one of the few Piromese to leave Piromere and one of the fewer still who traveled extensively through the Borderlands and the Wastes. Most of his studies were focused in the Fair Dunes and the Deadwood.
Because of his time studying the origins and modern day culture of the Numab, Max came to the radical conclusion that Numabian and Piromese people originated from the same original people, the Beti, before the fall of Chog. Only after the fall did they become separate people. He believes that it was not Gao that handpicked the Piromese to be saved, but that it was an act of random chance who was left on each side of the Border Mountains. Because of this shared origin, Max thinks that there should be more trade of people, ideas, and things between the Numab and Piromere. He is one of the prominent voices for equal treatment of Numabian people and for the stop of warding stolen children. Because of this, he's on the outs with the Disciples of Gao. However, his natural story teller abilities combined with his unique experiences make him a popular educator/entertainer. Because of this, he has been granted a rare lecturer position at the Innovation Center as a retirement. His lectures are a favorite of the King's and maybe part of the reason his rebellious ideas are tolerated by the Disciples.
Gender Identity
Max identifies as a man, but he doesn't feel the need to prove it. He is secure and self-assured, so he likes to experiment with incorporating the gender neutral garb of the Numab into his wardrobe, which in Piromere is quite scandalous. Slightly avant-garde, he likes to challenge others' perceptions of him to the point of discomfort.
Education
Max wanted to go to the Innovation Center for a formal education, but could not afford the tuition. To get experience for later applications, he joined as a field hand for an expedition to the Scrub Land Wastes. During these series of expeditions, he picked up all the skills he could, impressing the lead investigators. After about a decade of experience in the Scrub Land Wastes, Max lead his first expedition to the Fair Dunes. While he never got a formal degree from the Innovation Center, he has spent a great deal of time in its library, its halls, and its faculty lounges as a technician and then as a collaborator.
Employment
For most of his career, he has been able to either work on expeditions funded by the Innovation Center or by wealthy Piromese patrons. Because of this, he's had tremendous flexibility in terms of research goals and expedition aims. With his decades of experience, network of contacts, and a flair for story telling, Max has been a popular figure at many expedition fundraisers. He has focused most of his time in the Fair Dunes and the Deadwood. He would love to study the Cold Rocky Wastes, but the Numab are too wary of outsiders studying that region. He has visited the Boiling Lakes and the Marshes of Madness, but due to the difficulty in getting there and surviving, his travels there have been limited. He has skirted the Blistering Dunes and has heard of the Maze Canyons, but has yet to visit.
Accomplishments & Achievements
His greatest achievements come from his uncovering of various ruins in the Wastes, particularly the Fair Dunes and the Deadwood. He has mapped out several surface, underground, and underwater ruins, setting up several long term study sites that are jointly studied by the Numab and the Piromese.
Mental Trauma
There are rumors that Max is half Numabian. Because of this, his family's lower socioeconomic status, and his meteoric rise in social standing, his dissenters have pushed back against him. They will say things along the lines of his trying to weaken traditional Piromese values to dilute our culture or lead an invasion of Numabian culture/people into Piromere. This is disturbing to Max (Why should success be predicated on starting status? What does it even mean to weaken traditional values? What is so bad about the Numabians?) and he has little tolerance for those who perpetuate these whispers. He has a hard time valuing the inputs of those who have not spent anytime beyond Piromere.
Intellectual Characteristics
He is very adept at learning new skills. He likes to read and reads broadly, keeping up with the latest in the arts as well as the sciences. He enjoys learning new things so develops new hobbies frequently. He is a major patron of the arts.
Morality & Philosophy
He believes in the fundamental value of human life and the equality of all. He has little time for titles, only what doors they open to let him do cool adventures.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
He has a boundless curiosity about the human condition and our place in the world.
Social
Contacts & Relations
His arch rival is Rand Belmont who is also a retired explorer. Rand focused more on the flora and fauna of the Borderlands and the Wastes, but is very disdainful of the Numab. Because of their fundamental differences in approaches to research, the two explorers have been at odds their entire careers and now have dueling lecturer positions at the Innovation Center.
