Astral Plane
The Astral Plane is a multifaceted dimensional plane. It is what binds and connects all other universes, realms, and dimensions together. The look of the Plane also differs, depending on how one is entering or using it.
Layers
The Ethereal
The Ethereal is accessed by one who is astrally projecting their consciousness. It appears as an identical copy of the waking world, however doorways can be used to travel to any place one wishes to go. Souls of the dead are visible in the Ethereal, though they cannot be interracted with.
The Surface
Otherwise known as "limbo," the Surface is a nearly endless expanse of fog and water. Instead of swimming, the water is walked upon. Accessing the Surface on purpose is an incredibly difficult feat; usually, an unlucky soul will wander too far and will find themselves trapped.
Any being from any dimesion, universe, and realm can gain access to the Surface.
The Shore
The edge of the Surface is known as the Shore. There is nothing but black sand and hopelessness here.
Slipping Below
The only way to escape the surface is to slip underneath the waters. One either must be incredibly lucky or incredibly skilled to pull off this feat.
The Waterways
After one slips beneath the waves, they must allow the weight of the water to drag them down into the dark depths. In the deepest part is a bottomless cave system--these caves are portals leading to other realms, universes, and dimensions. One can choose to enter one of these portals or continue to let the crushing water drag them further down.
The Above-Beneath
After falling for an eternity, one will break the surface below the Waterways. This is an in-between space, a place that both exists and does not. Exits are few and far between for those astrally projecting.
There are certain species that are naturally capable of physically entering the Above-Beneath, able to come and go as they please. Certain technologies can also allow individuals to enter, using the Above-Beneath to travel vast distances in short amounts of time; this is otherwise known as traveling at the speed of light.
