Wandering Shade
A wandering shade is the earth-tethered soul of a deceased sentient being.
Appearance
Wandering shades appear as shadowy figures with white glowing eyes. They can have a humanoid shape with definable features, such as arms and legs, or they can appear simply as a shadowed mass.
Detection
Wandering shades are notoriously difficult to find, and even harder to prove real. While most of their features are invisible to the living eye, one can find themself lucky--or unlucky--to spot their eyes amongst the darkness. They can, however, be found through scientific means if one knows how and where to look. Drow with the ability to communicate with the dead can see and speak to wandering shades, as well as summon shades to their location.
Behavior
Wandering shades cannot, under their own power, stray far from their location of death, in most cases only a couple hundred feet or so. A person who had been exceptionally powerful with magic in life could theoretically travel farther.
