Rostam

Travelling up the big hill and down again we reach a desolate town covered in broken shacks all lined up in a row. There was not a single person on the street and the place had very few trees which made the wind a lot stronger and icier than over the hill. There were no market stalls, no fruit or veg or clothes to sell. It was completely empty. The ground was also different, it was rough and a dark brown colour like grass that had not been tended to for decades. Scraps of plastic and needles littered the floor that we had to hop from one clean patch to another to avoid it poking through our boots. The place smelled of nothing but smoke which had made it hard to breathe. In the clearing the fog cleared to show a factory and that was the only sign of life, sign of humans. A little boy carrying some wood walked passed barefoot into one of the shacks. “What is this place?” I ask bewildered.

History

The district of Rostam has largely been isolated from the rest of Azaad due to its brutal supression it has faced during the late Lamentari conquest. Rostam has historically been a political strong hold of the Azaadi and had been the last district to surrender after the battle of Akaash. Rostam was once known as the 'abode of wisdom' due to their many intellectuals in the past and it is for this reason Rostam suffers greatly today. The Lamentari has repressed the population, strangling its resources and wealth in fear of this information coming to light. Therefore Rostam has become a desolate and forgotten district.
