Hailith Chase

Queen Hailith Chase (a.k.a. The Fair)

“Lord Mason... you are a cobble-brain. How dare you waste not only the time of the crown, but that of the attendees with more pressing concerns? I know full well you have plenty of your own money to spend on such frivolity, and you want to RAISE TAXES?! ... Esteemed members of the royal court, please take note of what I will do to those who waste. My. Time!” - record of a royal court event with Queen Hailith. The Lord in question is reportedly and bodily thrown out of the castle gates by Her Majesty.

Personal history

Hailith Chase was born to Ruler Jubilant of the Chase lineage and their Ender wife, Alirach Chase. As a child, she had a habit of sneaking out of the castle at night to visit the city in disguise. She made friends with a lot of common folk during her childhood. She wanted to be taught at a school like common children and fought with her parents over being required to study with royal tutors. In her teenage years, she was taught sword combat and took an interest in medicinal science. As firstborn, she was declared Crown Princess at age 18, and it was decided that she would be the one to take the throne after her parents.
Jubilat Chase abdicated the throne when Hailith was 31, claiming their age and declining mental health made them unfit to rule. Treehold named her Queen Hailith and crowned her with the famous family heirloom. Incidentally, Hailith's coronation coincided with the Feast of St. Gwilin, patron saint of physicians and the terminally ill in Initiatism. She always found that fact serendipitous.
Shortly after her coronation, Hailith's younger brother Gerabrynn grew jealous. Only one year younger than his sister, he wanted the throne for himself. First, he argued with Hailith that he deserved it, and tried to talk her into becoming a physician instead. His reasoning was that since she liked health science so much, she should devote a career to it. Hailith thought that was a bad idea, since she had already been crowned Queen and it was what their parents wanted. Gerabrynn stopped bringing it up with her, but he did start a campaign trying to sway public opinion in his favour. It is believed that this is where Queen Hailith's infamous impatience for political brouhahas began. She threatened to banish her brother from Treehold if he did not stop. Gerabrynn immaturely declared that she could not exile him if he exiled himself first, and he left for the city-state of Hedria.
As Queen, one of her earliest declarations was to name Common as the official language of Treehold, and had plans to deem Ender an official language as well. She passed the decree with the intent to standardize official communications within Treehold, not to favour any language over another. This would have terrible consequences in the era of Richard II, but Hailith could never have known that. Another, less important thing she did was Queen was to have the diorite floor in the castle's ballroom ripped up and replaced with Nether quartz. She hated the look of diorite, likening it to "bird poop" and refused to use the room until the change had been made.
Hailith married late in life, falling for and wedding her wife Zetha at age 40. Together they adopted three children: Petra, Kubo, and Naja. Her son Kubo was the oldest of the children, so he was deemed next in line to succeed her.
Jubilat Chase died at age 72 when Hailith was 50 years old. She declared that they would lie in state for four days and held a memorial service. When he heard the news, Gerabrynn returned from his self-imposed exile to pay his respects. It was there that he reconciled with Hailith and apologized for his childish behavior. He had heard of his sister's track record as a good ruler and acknowledged that she had been the right choice after all. Also, he had become a knight in Hedria and no longer had an interest in the throne.
In her late adulthood, Hailith fell quite ill with a then-unknown condition. Notes taken by the contemporary family physician and Hailith herself describe chronic fatigue, constant leg aches, and brittle bones (Hailith ended up irreparably breaking both legs by age 60, and she had to spend the rest of her life in primitive push-chairs and sedans.) Modern students of medicine say her symptoms were in-line with bone cancer. She died in her sleep shortly after her 64th birthday; it is believed that the cancer metastasizing to another part of her body is what killed her. To this day, no-one knows if she developed it because of hereditary risk or other factors. Since Hailith's ancestors did not seem to have bone cancer and none of her children were biological, nobody can really know for sure. She was survived by Zetha, who governed Treehold for two years before abdicating and giving the crown to Kubo. Zetha held the memorial service for Hailith, having the mourning-bells tolled 64 times for each year of her wife's life. Hailith was buried in the family crypt in Treehold Castle's catacombs.

Social

Social Aptitude

Hailith was known to have a low tolerance for nonsense. So much so that she is known to have nobles who attempt to raise taxes for their own personal benefits removed from the throne room, either by the guards or herself.

Mannerisms

Queen Hailith, much like her ancestor Gabriel, was known to be fair as she could in her judgments, should such cases reach the throne
