Hall of Portraits

The Portrait Chamber is where the past rulers of Treehold are remembered. A door through this room leads down into the royal catacombs and thus the currently sealed and inactive Treehold End Portal

Purpose / Function

Kubo Chase had the Hall of Portraits constructed for display of his paintings, with the intention that they would enrich and inform future generations.

Contents & Furnishings

The Portaits lining the walls are as follows:
  • Peter the Dragonhearted/Gabriel the Just: Peter is seated in his throne, wearing his armor and other royal regalia, including his crown. By his side stands Gabriel wearing a simpler crown and a soft smile as they rest their hand on Peter’s shoulder
  • Lucretia the Humble: Lucretia, wearing a simple gown, smiles politely at the viewer.
  • Hailith the Fair: She stands front and center, face carefully neutral.
  • Jubilat the Bard: He sits in his throne, strumming a lute.
  • Kubo the Artist: Kubo specifically ensured there was no official portrait of him, therefore the frame in his space simply shows a white canvas.
  • Richard I the Wise: Wears a doctor’s outfit without the stereotypical mask.
  • Alexander the Snake-Charmer: Alexander stands with a cunning look on his face. Around his shoulders is a large snake.
  • Damian the Sculptor: Shows him hard at work in his studio, crown set aside, chiseling at a block of marble.
  • Howard the Astronomer: Howard stands atop a tower, gazing at the night sky through a telescope.
  • Jason the Alchemist: Jason stands at an alembic on a table, holding a vial of liquid that seems to be a different color for everyone who looks at it.
  • Raphael the Priest: Shows him praying, eyes closed and solomn, before a Pukleshi flame.
  • Susan the Bright: She sits in her throne, a simple hand mirror in her lap, with a sweet smile.
  • Bayard the Mage: Bayard’s portrait shows him holding aloft a fireball above his hand, a mage’s staff glowing in the other,
  • Richard II the Tyrant: Due to his poor reputation, any portrait of his was destroyed. In his frame’s space is a slashed picture of him, the face burned out.

History

The Hall of Portraits was originally a generic room to lead into the antechamber for the Treehold catacombs. During his reign, Kubo Chase found the room very dull, but he did like its somewhat secluded location. He secretly moved some of his easels, canvases, and drawing models into the room to make it into an improvised studio where he could paint in peace. He enjoyed the ample sunlight and cool temperatures the room offered, believing them essential for a great painting experience.
It wasn't long before his family discovered his hiding-spot and marvelled at the portraits he'd made and hung up on the bare walls, depicting past Chase royals and a few mythological events. His wife Kresida encouraged him to convert the boring room into a display hall for his creations. So he did, hanging up the portraits of his ancestors in a sequence from Peter the Dragonhearted to himself.
... Only two kings do not currently have a portrait: Gabriel II (by their own decision), and Richard II (whose portrait, if it existed, was destroyed after his assassination).

Tourism

Today, the Hall of Portraits is commonly used as a way for students to work through their problems, by way of conversing with one of the old rulers.
