Scrolls

Scrolls are a way for spell casters to prepare spells to be cast quickly and without material components. A scroll can be prepared by a mage and used at a later time or given to another mage to cast, as long as said mage has the ability to cast that spell.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

As long as a spell caster has the ability to eventually learn the spell that is on the scroll, they can attempt to cast it. If they have the spell slot of the spell they are trying to cast and it is on their list of spells, they can cast it without a hitch. If they do not have the spell slot yet, but the spell is on their list, they can attempt a DC 10+spell level to cast it. If they fail, the spell fails and the scroll turns to ash. If the spell caster does not have the spell on their list, the scroll is completely illegible to them.

Manufacturing process

A mage can effectively cast the spell they are preparing, consuming the material components and committing the spell to paper, allowing a mage to finish what is required on the scroll to cast it.

Significance

A spell scroll is significant because creating one is not a feat any mage can complete. It is something a gifted mage can do, but it can effectively teach another studied mage how to cast the same spell in the future. A spell scroll can act as a life saving item when the party is desperate, or as forbidden knowledge for the learned mage.
