Ahemi Mohil

President Ahemi Mohil

If I was elected to this position purely off the back of name recognition - a name which, mind you, had not been in significant political office since the 350s - then how would you explain the 424 election? Surely any power my surname may hold would have disintegrated in the face of my total incompetence, as you say. And yet, here I am, Támsha. Perhaps your party would have greater presidential success if you focused on my policy rather than my pedigree.
— Ahemi Mohil to former president Maaloli Támsha
Ahemi Mohil is the current President of the Republic of Skarhu, having been elected in 421 and winning re-election in 424. They are the great-great-grandchild of the famous President Tahla Mohil.

History

Ahemi was born 384 in Plumtris, the youngest of 5 children. From an early age, they threw themselves into books of history, particularly devouring the story of the Vosti Civil War. At one point, they intended to join the Skarhan Navy and sail the southern seas, but a carriage accident in their teens made this highly unlikely, especially when their sight began to fade sharply shortly thereafter. Before it became impossible to navigate, Ahemi threw themselves into learning tactile writing, determined not to lose their ability to read along with their sight.   Dreams of military service dashed, Ahemi instead focused on their love of history and political manoeuvring, studying history and law at Plumtris County University. Graduating with high grades, they joined a Plumtris organisation focused on increasing accessibility, especially in education and politics. Through them, they ended up volunteering for Kóyahl Liayula, the blind Liberal candidate for Plumtris North at the 405 Assembly election, helping to arrange transport as well as providing her with her opponent's election materials so she could effectively counter his position. Kóyahl took a particular liking to Ahemi, and upon winning her seat in the Assembly, hired Ahemi as one of her staffers. There Ahemi remained for 6 years, helping with a variety of administrative duties as well as providing their knowledge of law to Kóyahl.   Ahead of the 411 election, Kóyahl announced her intention to not contest, and put forward Ahemi as a suitable replacement. Ahemi's status as a descendant of the famous Tahla Mohil, as well as their track record as a staffer, secured them the candidacy and the election. Now a member of the Skarhan Assembly, Ahemi continued advocating for greater accessibility. Key reforms they were able to pass were the smoothing of pedestrian paths and clear visual markers of where footpath met roads, as well as supporting initiatives to support rural areas in paving paths, something they might not ordinarily be able to justify spending money on.   Ahemi's enthusiasm, intelligence, and advocacy gained them important positions within the Liberal opposition despite their relative youth, and they were easily re-elected to the assembly in 414, 417, and 420. They were briefly floated as a potential presidential candidate in the 418 election, but Ahemi declined. Only in 421, with the assurance that being president would not impact their ability to continue disability reforms did they finally agree, running an energetic campaign all across the republic. This included the oft-forgotten counties of Yulemta and Wenz, which saw only middling interaction from other candidates, including the incumbent Maaloli Támsha. Ahemi's narrow victory was attributed to their rural outreach, and made them the first Liberal President of Skarhu in over a decade.   Little has changed about them or their policy in their time as President, committing heavily to accessibility and ensuring the happiness of their citizens. While they came into the presidency after the Kingdom of Telziad's transition into constitutional monarchy, they have made multiple trips to the kingdom to support its new democracy and young ruler, and Ahemi is keen to support any other democratisation efforts throughout Abravost, such as those being whispered about in the north of the Vosti Empire.

Famous Descent

Ahemi's great-great-grandmother is the famous Tahla Mohil, one of the more influential Skarhan Presidents in the 4th century. She was initially only remarkable for being the first Liberal president in 70 years, after long periods of Nationalist and Planar governance.   However, she was soon thrust into a position of high responsibility in the wake of The Separation, which tore apart the realms of human and elf and destroyed portals. With many non-citizens stranded within her borders, Tahla quickly committed to the repatriation and resettlement of those trapped, subsidising boat fares back to their home countries and offering to house those who could not get home until portals were re-established.   Her overwhelming generosity soon caught the attention of the Wenz Islands in the south, who requested aid to avoid being conscripted into a brewing civil war in the Vosti Empire. Her intervening to protect this valuable port rest stop for her trade routes infuriated the Empire, who were decimated in short order by the Skarhan Navy. Tahla is well remembered for her social policy and efficient wartime strategy, and the counties of Wenz and Yulemta are only part of the republic thanks to her keen negotiation.
