Dragon Scale

You'll never guess what I found on a walk in the forest. A dragon scale! Look at how it shines. It's so beautiful. I'm gonna poke the smallest hole in it possible so I can string it on a necklace!
Despite an abundance of dragons throughout ThurĂ¡sin, all "materials" gathered from them are very rare. This is because harming a dragon is a big deal to many cultures on the continent, and it's nigh impossible to gather blood or bones humanely. The one partial exception are dragon scales, which can fall off healthy dragons with no harm.

Characteristics and Uses

Dragon scales are the largest known in Tiyu Amara, with the closest competitor believed to be the scales of Kiingtaalwi. Both have dark undertones and iridescent sheens, but where dragon scales excel is in their durability, requiring specially forged tools to pierce or cut, as well as being heat resistant.   These have a few uses, often being found as necklaces or worn charms. In cases of particular extravagance, they can be used as a core part of an outfit, such as a shirt being entirely covered in the scales. It obviously has some defensive properties, and its heat resistance makes it appealing as armour. Such armours are reserved for only individuals of high importance, such as monarchs or generals.   The significance of dragons as a cultural symbol through ThurĂ¡sin means that owning even a single scale is a big deal to many. They are ascribed a divine quality, and this means their most common use is religious in nature. Scales will be included in the outfits of religious officials, adorn items of ritual importance, and be present in celebrations of marriage or mournings of death.

Divine Defence

The qualities dragon scales are most associated with are defence and divinity. It follows, then, that the possession of a scale could grant someone defence, and that this defence is given to them by The Divinities of Tiyu Amara.   Many people will spend their lives trying to acquire just a single scale, and wear it as a good luck charm on their person until their deaths. The larger the scale, the more likely the wearer is to avoid grave harm. According to folk legend, having more than one scale as a charm will negate this property, as the Divinities will see you as greedy and undeserving of protection.

I think this is my favourite bit. I love the idea that the scales fall from healthy dragons and people pick them up as charms.
