Heartstone

The Heartstone was an item native to the world of Mystara. Its power was to test the hearts of those who sought it, creating figures of ruby light that duplicated the strengths and weaknesses of those who would claim the stone. Those who defeated the constructs continued their lives as always, but those defeated by the constructs found themselves warped and fractured, if seen through a shattered lens. Those who were good became evil and vice-versa.
