Arachnid Weavers

Also known as Veil Weavers, the Arachnid Weavers are a species of huge arachnid creatures that inhabit the celestial vault far away from Tolaris.   Old lore talks about the god Neb-Neter-U and how he created the first Weavers as to give the Beyond an end, and thus creating arcane Magic as a byproduct. Hard science tells us that they are the entities responsible for creating and maintaining the Ley Lines that make Magic possible.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Arachnid Weavers are arachnid-like entities with a series of pyramided, fleshy rings and antennae where a head would normally be. They are about 30-feet long and 20-feet wide, with a set of six paired leg-like appendages and two ectoplasmic quasi-real wings that do not function well in normal gravity.   Their bodies up until where their head begins are covered by a set of black iron-like chitin segments and towards the opposite end is a fleshy spinneret. When dead, their corpses quickly decompose, leaving a psionically active powder known as Veil Dust.   While a Weaver’s wings are near useless in normal Tolaris gravity. In the astral vault, they allow the creature to move at near light speed, if following a Veil Ley Line however, they can instantaneously disappear and reappear anywhere the Veil touches.

Genetics and Reproduction

Ararchnid Weavers, unlike many other spiders, are actually asexual. When a Weaver is ready to reproduce towards the end of its life, it will spin a cylindrical heavily compact Veil formation near a star, which it will then fill with spores and die. A single Weaver can spawn hundreds of identical copies of itself, because of this; it is not rare for many individuals to share a star.

Growth Rate & Stages

Immature Weavers begin their life as a larva, a small grub no bigger than a house cat that will consume the energy of the Beyond through the star it sits in, after about a year has passed the larva begins to pupate before violently emerging in a few days as a fully-grown adult. This event is usually massive, and the reason why some stars in the night sky appear to flicker.   An adult Weaver lives about three years before dying.

Ecology and Habitats

The Arachnid Weavers make their home in the astral vault where they knit the pockets of Beyond together in a complex web named the Veil. The Vault is a semi-solid porous membrane, while the veil covers most of the smaller holes completely, the bigger ones form large luminous spheres – the stars.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The pockets of quasi-divine energy that radiates from the beyond compose the main diet of the Arachnid Weavers.    While one would think that because of the isolated environment and lack of evident predators they would have become sedentary and tame, it does not seem to be the case. Individuals that weave the veil away from stars are largely innocuous and calm, but the closer one gets to a star they become more fierce and aggressive. Nobody knows the reason for this behavior.
