Augur (Og-ger)

The Augur is a position within the Empire and the Order's Church that is tasked with recording and transcribing the wishes of the Creators, the gods of the Creation Pantheon .   The actual act of reading the prophecy of someone depends on the background the Augur came from. While typically a former Cleric that would use materials such as sand, light, and some type of wine or other combination, an Augur can come from any background. A Divination Wizard might use knowledge from their studies combined with the grace of a god or a former soldier might simply be given the chance to see it in a vision should they be granted that insight by their god.   It is suspected by some, particularly in rural areas or by shadowy distrusting types, that the Augur's are only truly granted any divine insight a portion of the time and simply predict the obvious the majority of the time. They instead abuse this power in the church to find easy access to secrets as it is impossible to deny an Augur access to someone should they wish to reveal their destiny to them.

History

The Augur position is founded in the belief that every race should have a chance at keeping an honorable destiny. This belief was solidified as a tenant for the church during the Age of Demigods as Rhune, demigod of Orn ascended. Rhune's own personal display of honor was when he slayed the devil Eligos who was fleeing his realm. Eligos, who knew he would be defeated, had made sure to receive Rhune's wife in his own personal realm, who had been sent to hell for her own deeds. While Eligos offered to free her in return for passage into Tomeria, Rhune denied him for the sake of Tomeria, banishing Eligos back to his realm where his wife suffered in eternal torment.

Cultural Significance

To most common folk within a city the knowledge that an Augur will be coming to the area is exciting news. A large entourage of wealthy individuals in the area for any duration of time is quite the boon. While it's uncommon to be chosen by the gods to have their destiny prophesized knowing your own future can help those in the fast paced life of a city get ahead and so it is not uncommon to see huge celebrations thrown as merchants vie for the attention of the Augur as they pass through.    In the rural countryside however, it is quite different. An Augur while respected, is met with quite the scrutiny as they commonly tell them prophecies with dim outlooks. While it is impossible to deny an Augur to impress upon you your destiny it isn't uncommon for rural individuals to avoid an Augur as they pass through.
