His determination to dominate the Netherdeep is matched only by his burning hatred for the elves. Gazh is ruthless, untrusting, and paranoid, a reflection of his experiences and the abyss he now calls home.
Lair
The Netherdeep is a strange realm, even in the infinte layers of the abyss. Filled with water, an egnimatic ruler in the heart of the netherdeep twisted the layer form to be a dangerous and enigmatic labyrinth full of traps and dead ends.
History
Genesis of a demon
Gazh, still a mortal, a Goliath working for the elves, had been summoned by the king personally, but soon harbored an ambition to rule after witnessing the folly in the monarch's decisions. He murdered the king, and naturally, his brutal usurpation was not unchallenged, and the royal army swiftly restrained him until he received his verdict.
bound by blessed deep lead chains attached to a large anchor, he was banned from the realm of mortals, casted so far out in the ocean the boundaries with other planess was fragile. When he was thrown into the water, he began his endless descent, with every bit of light fading away as he sank into what appeared to be an unending ocean.
He madly struggled to release himself before his lungs filled with brine while voices laughed at his efforts. Countless demons now surrounded him, as his anger had broken the veil between the planes, transporting him to the abyss. The demons laughed at Gazh's efforts, however, their derision gave way to awe, for empowered by the sheer anger flowing through every inch of his body, Gazh shattered the heavy links.
He rushed to the surface, his weighty encumbrance transformed into a weapon of vengeance. However, he remained confined within the boundless waters of the Netherdeep. Now, he was thoroughly displeased with the elves and their shallow understanding.
"There is none more suitable to be king than I, for, just as the sun you worship, I also rose again after plunging into the seas!"
Driven by wrath, he sought to establish his dominance over the Netherdeep, determined to eliminate all who opposed him and, ultimately, to return to the Prime Material Realm.
Corrupting the sea elves
When a group of sea elves sought power from the gods, the demonlord of the depths, Gazh, answered their call instead, reveled in the opportunity for vengeance against the king who had condemned him to the bottomless abyss. Eager to exact his revenge, Gazh granted the elves immense power, enhancing their affinity with the ocean. However, this newfound strength came at a terrible price—their sanity. Driven mad by their overwhelming abilities, the sea elves began launching brutal, unprovoked assaults on underwater creatures and civilizations.
Their relentless aggression soon earned them a new name among those who dwelled beneath the waves:
Triton. Over the ages, they started to regain their sanity, but their brutal campaign of destruction as granted them a reputation as terror of the depth, as a species of demon warriors.
Facing the horror
Centuries later, Gazh still ruled over the Netherdeep, unwilling to share his leadership. He retained the hope of eventually escaping and enacting his vengeance on the Prime Material Realm and the elves. In his relentless quest to break free from the Netherdeep, Gazh received an unexpected contact from Xerathal, a Beholder attempting to escape the celestial games. Xerathal believed that the deeper layers of the abyss would shield him from the prying eyes of celestial beings.
Gazh cautiously accepted Xerathal's proposal. However, the paranoid abomination double-crossed him, deceiving him into a vulnerable position under the pretext of performing a ritual to escape the abyss and subsequently dominate a demon lord. Xerathal found himself unable to kill the demon lord because the same anger that had transformed him into a demon also rendered Gazh nearly indestructible. Instead, Xerathal resorted to sealing the demon lord within his newly claimed domain of the abyss. Paralyzed by paranoia, he refused to let Gazh go, fearing the demon lord would pose a significant threat.
