Spirit of Ice
Jörmungandr is an elder elemental in between the plane of air and water, hat plane refer to as the plane of ice. Only one Jörmungandr can exist at any given time, a new one arising if the previous was killed. Jörmungandr also represents the spirit of ice and an ancient and powerful force.
Worship
Those elemental spirits are worshiped by certain creatures and cults. The methods for summoning elemental spirits remain hidden in forbidden tomes or inscribed on the walls of lost temples raised to honor the spirits. Only casters of superlative skill have even the faintest chance of calling forth one of these spirits, and the spellcaster is often destroyed by the effort. Thus, only the most unhinged and nihilistic members of Elemental Evil cults attempt such a summoning, in the hope of hastening the world toward some cataclysmic end.
A howling blizzard, spreading in all directions, freezing to death everything within its reach, and ever-expanding — that phenomenon typifies the destruction Jörmungandr can unleash on the world. When called forth, Jörmungandr arises from a large body snowy storm to form an immense serpent-shaped creature.
History
Jörmungandr is the name of an ancient mythical creature of the northern mythology, mostly referenced by northalanders and frost elves. Jörmungandr was believed to be a serpent so large that it wrapped itself around the world, gaining the title of world serpent, and plunging the world into an ice age.
Those legend are the foundations of the white frost prophecy, mainly believed by Aen elle (also called frost elves), as the appearance of elementals connected to the world serpent is perceived as sign of an incoming apocalypse.
The ice wraith in those region hold an important place in the culture, symbolizing finest event and the unforgivable winter, an incarnation of the end of times, the serpents that will devour the world. Impressive bonfires are lit at night to protect the villages and repel them.
The name Jörmungandr is still used to referenced the spirit of Ice, holding a fraction of the power that he once had, he is believed to slowly grow stronger, to slowly accumulate power to become the world ending monster he is destined to be.
Jörmungandr sweep across the Elemental Plane of Ice, an unstoppable blizzard in his wake freezing everything. Possessing greater power over ice, this ancient elemental grew stronger by feeding on its lesser kin and adding their power to its own until it became something extraordinary. With all this power accumulated, Jörmungandr transcended the limit of elemental and became the spirit of ice, the incarnation of all blizards, far beyond the reach of any god of the frost or similar deity.
Jörmungandr is a being of apocalyptic capability, whose mere existence promises destruction in his wake if he was to ever leave his plane.
