— Hunter Bwu'ja

Culture

Society

Trolls travel in non-migratory clans of 3 to 12 individuals and, upon discovery of an area rich with prey, they establish a camp. They are often located near smaller humanoid settlements, including established roads as those who travel off the part serve as a great source of food.   Although they don't fear humanoid when encountered, they respect them as a group that are known to wield fire, a weakness of theirs.

Cannibalism

Cannibalism is a relatively common troll practice. Several specific troll tribes have been confirmed as cannibalistic. All of the currently known tribes of ice trolls practice cannibalism. Sand trolls, forest trolls, dark trolls, and jungle trolls are also frequently cannibalistic.

Characteristics

Physical features

Each troll is different from one another due to its mutative properties. They have both elven and orc-like characteristics with their fierce tusks and long ears. Their long arms, strong legs, quick reflexes as well as their incredible agility and strength make them adept hunters.   Trolls have three fingers, and three toes with one protruding from the heel. Both males and females have a variety of tusk styles ranging from small to large, they also feature a wide range of wild hairstyles, though mohawks are very common.   Common trolls' bodies can support plant life to a limited extent due to mutation. A thin layer of moss may grow on their skin shortly after they are born, giving them their characteristic greenish color. Snow dweller trolls' bodies are covered in short, soft fur which causes them to appear blue or gray.

Abilities

Smashing a troll’s bones and slashing through its rubbery hide only makes it angry. A troll’s wounds close quickly. If the monster loses an arm, a leg, or even its head, those dismembered parts can sometimes act with a life of their own. A troll can even reattach severed body parts, untroubled by its momentary disability. Only acid and fire can arrest the regenerative properties of a troll’s flesh. The trolls, enraged, will attack individuals making acid and fire attacks against them above all other prey.   Trolls are capable of controlling their regeneration, though how they do so is unknown, but a troll can make a conscious decision to not heal a scar as to leave a mark of what has happened to them. It is most likely this control that allows trolls to retain piercings, tattoos, and other bodily modifications that would otherwise be considered damage needing to be repaired by the body.   Their regenerative capabilities make trolls especially susceptible to mutation. Although uncommon, such transformations can result from what the troll has done or what has been done to it. A decapitated troll might grow two heads from the stump of its neck, while a troll that eats a fey creature might gain one or more of that creature’s traits.

Subraces

Trolls that are nearly obliterated but survive and regenerate from mere scraps of flesh can display bizarre features. Radically transformed trolls like the rot trolls, spirit trolls, and venom trolls that follow are especially likely to arise when trolls regenerate in the presence of magical emanations, planar energy, disease, or death on a vast scale, or if their bodies were damaged by elemental forces. These unusual forms can also be produced and shaped by the ritual Magic of evil spellcasters or by trolls’ own practices, as is the case for dire trolls.

Common Troll

The most common type of troll has deep forest-green skin. They are around nine feet tall, and they have long, exaggerated jaws, straggly black hair, and long, pointed hooked noses; their eyes are yellow with white pupils, and reflect light in the dark like cats' eyes.

Dire Troll

A small number of trolls are strikingly larger and more heavily muscled than the rest of their brethren. Dire trolls do not have a racial distinction from the rest of the troll race. A variety of reasons might be behind this unusual size and musculature. For example, these trolls might have been altered alchemically or magically. They might also simply have evolved to be larger than average. These large trolls are not regarded as monstrous by other trolls.

Ice Troll

Able to grow to nine feet tall, these trolls have dull teal-blue skin and fur, elongated arms and legs, and a high-pitched, yelp-like scream. The claws of these trolls give off a cold mist when they strike a target.

Rot Troll

A troll infused with waves of necrotic energy as it regenerates can develop a symbiotic relationship with that deathly power. The troll’s body withers, and the flesh falls away from the body as quickly as it forms. Eventually a rot troll becomes unable to regenerate, though the troll still heals normally. The creature courses with necrotic energy; simply standing near a rot troll exposes other creatures to lethal emanations.

Spirit Troll

A troll blasted with psychic energy can take a nonphysical form upon regenerating. The troll’s psyche survives, but the body is as insubstantial as shadow. The troll might be unaware of the transition—the creature still moves and attacks with teeth and claws as ever—but now the troll strikes at victims’ minds.

Venom Troll

A troll that survives massive doses of poison might transform into a venom troll. Lingering poison infuses the troll’s blood and tissue, and poison leaks from the pores to coat the troll’s fangs and claws. These creatures are especially dangerous in close combat because poison drips off their flesh and sprays out from every wound they receive.   Venom trolls are bulbous, with a deep green-blue skin tone with little pustules and boils on it. The torso appears to be swollen, its belly protruding beyond it. Out of the pustules and part of its body oozes thick green poison, and it sprays out from every wound they receive.

History

Genesis

The ogres were created by the giants as servants, but rebelled and formed their own empire under the leadership of Gorgrog, a powerful mage. They prospered and advanced in trade and technology, but also split into two factions: the surface ogres and the underground orcs. They tried to challenge the giants, who cursed them with stupidity and caused their empire to fall.   At the end of the Draco-Giant War in 1 AD, the tides of fate finally changed, which resulted in the ban of the giants. As the giants were ousted and their grip on power weakened, the veil that clouded the minds of ogre was weakened, and some rare individual's potential was finally revealed.   In search of unlocking the full potential of their minds, small clans of awakened ogres came together to explore new paths. It was during this quest for mental prowess that Tal Iss, the Demonlord of mutation, approached them. She proposed a pact: in exchange for shielding their minds from attacks and curses and rendering their bodies resistant to harm, the ogres would become the paragons of mutation on Toriel, undergoing rapid transformations based on their environment and diet within a matter of days or weeks. The ogres, recognizing the potential benefits, accepted the offer, leading them to turn into what is now called trolls with the powerful mutation abilities they possess today.

Nomads

After undergoing their transformative change, the trolls settled in various regions, giving rise to new nations, clans, and realms. Many of them found their home in the lush jungles or the frigid northern territories. But some traveled far away from the material plane, far from the giant who cursed them.   In the harsh and unforgiving conditions of the north, the trolls formed nomadic clans that adapted to the changing seasons, constantly moving to find food and shelter. On the other hand, the jungle and forest trolls sought stability and began creating more permanent societies.
