Umunairu

Goddess of the storm, Goddess of the couatl

Umunairu is the goddess of storms. Merciless and impatient, Umunairu is equally likely to strike out at mortals with a bolt of inspiration or a blast of lightning. To revere Umunairu is to hope for the goddessblessing with the fury of the storm. She is favored by sailors and lorekeeper for her ancient distilled knowledge.   A storm, for all its unpredictability, can still be weathered by those who apply foresight and knowledge. So it is when dealing with Umunairu. She rewards those who act with forethought and decisiveness and punishes the reckless for their stupidity.   For good or ill, Umunairu exists as a disruptive force. She is the mother of the couatl, and an ancient draconic being. She doesn’t desire authority over other gods and, in fact, doesn’t particularly enjoy their company. She finds satisfaction not only in granting insight, but also in expressing the awesome fury of the storm. Where others see only chaos and destruction in storms, she sees them as shaping the firmament in ways that challenge and engage mortals. Her blasts of lightning set house and forest ablaze, thus rendering the soil clear for new life and new creations.

The raging storms surrounding her abode provide a significant advantage in battle. She can call down thunderous bolts of lightning to devastate her foes or command the wind to scatter them. Once isolated, Umunairu crushes the life out of weaker opponents and attempts to pull stronger enemies into the sky so that she might shatter them upon the jagged peaks beneath her home.   When faced with an overwhelming invasion, Umunairu will choose to flee. She can take to the skies easily, hiding in the dark storm clouds gathered about her home.

History

Umunairu is a dragon of storm and sky, but not a true dragon. Her slender serpentine form swims through the heavens, borne aloft on delicate wings. Lustrous feathers cover her body, reflecting and refracting the light around her. Those that have seen her describe her as a force of nature - like a flash of lightning in the night sky, the setting sun before a storm, a dancing aurora, or a fading rainbow.   But, when the ancient gods needed an army of celestial champions, Umunairu willingly sacrificed her spirit to birth the couatl. The couatl were imbued with a fragment of Umunairu's draconic might, and appearance and Umunairu received a gift in return. As long as even one couatl lives, she will never know a natural death, and will be a goddess, the goddess of storm.   This boon is not without drawbacks. Over the intervening centuries, the population of couatl has begun to dwindle. A portion of Umunairu's memory is lost with each of her children that pass from the mortal world. The confusion this causes coupled with the sorrow and rage she experiences with the realization of each new loss has left her temperamental. The storms around her reflect this inner turmoil, making much of the landscape surrounding her lair an inhospitable place.   Perched high above civilization, she is content to remain apart. Her interests rarely intersect with the world in such a way that she harms it. She watches as many of her children as she can. When they are threatened, she views this as a personal affront, visiting unrelenting retaliation against those that draw her ire. But, she help and bless the brave adventurers who save her children.
