Vadim tends the bar of the hanging tree and makes friendly conversation with patrons, who know him as Vado. He makes polite conversation with any character who orders a drink, asking where they’re from and what brings them to the Hanging Tree. If asked about the Ivory Throne, Vadim claims to know nothing special about the mercenary band. He deflects personal questions, saying he’s just a tavern owner. A character who succeeds on a DC 16 Wisdom (Insight) check knows Vadim is lying.
If a character orders a boiling oil, Vadim’s demeanor changes. He invites them to sit at a table and joins them, introducing himself as Dohma Vadim and asking what services the Ivory Throne can provide. For adventurers, he’s willing to order an assassination or a skirmish—if they’ll provide one for him in return. If he suspects the characters mean him harm, he calls for help from the bouncers and uses the shaker behind the bar to teleport to the Dohmain in the tavern's underground.
Characteristics
Physical features
Clad in a suit of weatherproofed chain mail and carrying a longsword and shield of a proportion equal to his size, this massive half-orc is an impressive sight to behold, with shoulders like an ox and muscles to match. A worn leather strap binds his long, coarse black hair into an economical ponytail to keep it from interfering in combat, and the wide scar just under his right eye speaks of a close call in his past that might have left him blinded, save for luck or skill. Upon the surface of his shield, an emblem indicating an allegiance to the God of savagery has been engraved, though little paint remains, flaked from the impact of deflected weapon blows.
History
Vadim Halforcen is an half
Orc half
Hobgoblin, born from the Redfang clan, his green skin set him appart despite his impressive build. Outcast from his own clan, he formed a band of mercenaries, the Ivory throne.
Under Vadim’s leadership, the throne has grown to over a hundred strong, mostly half orcs and hobgoblins outcast, and now they handle multiple contracts simultaneously, occasionally banding together to fight as a single unit in battle.
Vadim runs the throne from the Hanging Tree, his tavern where he plays the role of barkeep. Here, clients in the know can discreetly indicate their desire to hire bounty hunters, cutthroats, or thieves by ordering a boiling oil, a mundane blend of whiskey and rum that appears on no menu. Once the drink is ordered, Vadim himself appears at the table, ready to do business. He prides himself on remaining politically neutral and treating all potential customers as equals, something that chafes a few of his clients.
Hidden beneath the Hanging Tree tavern is the true headquarters of the Ivory Throne, a base with deadly defensive measures and lavish ornamentation. Here, Dohma Raskovar plots new jobs with his mercenary band and stores his treasures.
