Abyssal plague
A bloodborne pathogen originating from the Abyss. Causing flu-like symptoms at first, the plague eventually spreads to the lungs and causes the victim to vomit blood as their organs begin to fail and deteriorate, ultimately leading to death.
Transmission & Vectors
Bloodborne
Causes
Originating from Abyssal bats, the viral plague was spread to goblins through their close proximity living in caves. Both the bats and goblins act as carriers of the plague and are immune to the effects.
Symptoms
Early symptoms include fever, exhaustion, and body aches.
As the virus spreads, victims will begin to vomit blood, followed soon after by death.
Treatment
A cure has been manufactured by an unknown process involving a rare mushroom (Echui Telumbe) from the Kalarisi forest.
Prognosis
The condition is always fatal if left untreated.
If the victim is in the advanced stages of the plague, treatment may not be successful.
Affected Groups
Humans of any kind can be affected. It is unknown if any other species are affected as well; however, it appears that at least Goblins and Abyssal Bats are immune.
Hosts & Carriers
Goblins and Abyssal Bats are the only known carriers of the virus at this time. Both species are immune to the effects.
Prevention
It is unknown if the cure also acts as a vaccine. Further testing is needed.
Epidemiology
The plague was originally spread to the human population from a battle with goblin carriers. With battles comes bloodshed.
History
The Abyssal Plague is a very new sickness that has nothing been seen before. After the cure was found, the demon Mek'zureth appeared before the adventurers who procured the mushrooms used in the cure, and made an ominous threat of a coming war, of which the plague was just the beginning step (suggesting he had something to do with the introduction of this plague).
The only person of note who was infected with the Abyssal Plague was the daughter of the Baroness Von Draven, Magdalena. She received the cure in time and had since made a full recovery.
