Firearms in Society

Firearms are considered crass, showy and overcomplicated by most people. They prefer the simple elegance of a bow or crossbow at range.

Using Firearms

In most people's hands, firearms such as pistols are loud and unreliable weapons. They have significant recoil, which means that an inexperienced user trying to wield one is likely to shoot something other than their target. (Attempting to use a pistol without proficiency puts the user at disadvantage on the attack.)   Pistols must also be reloaded after every shot, which takes an action. So while they may suffice as "first attack" weapons, they do not work for long term ranged attack situations.   It's also been determined that the volatile explosive used for pistols does not scale well to larger weapons, as it's as likely to fail to explode, explode weakly or blow up the weapon itself than fire a large object. And in the event that it does work, it tends to fire unevenly and making accuracy impossible.

Skill with Firearms

Giff , with their lifetime of experience and massive size do not have these usage limitations with firearms, and gain the Firearm Specialist feat for free, meaning that they may use a pistol or rifle without disadvantage. They are also adept at reloading the weapons, and may do so as a bonus action, allowing them to fire each round.   It is possible for others to take the Firearm Specialist feat, if they meet the pre-reqs, to use firearms reliably.
