Modern Rooted
The past is difficult. One past we want to forget, one past we have already forgotten. After The Lomians were kicked out of Tosormi and The Rooted were freed from their enslavement, there arose a huge divide within the Rooted community. Some tried to return to the few villages and towns that still existed. Most Rooted, however, had been born in the cities and knew no other life.
New Rooted
Living in towns and cities meant a whole other life than the historical role of farmers and fishermen. Instead there arose new roles that needed to be filled. During the Lomians reign of Tosormi they had brought over Lomians to do most crafting and building tasks, not trusting the "primitive natives" to be able to handle it. But now there were a shortage of Lomian craftsmen and instead Rooted who had been a part of the whole of society in the shadows. First of all they took up their old traditions of tattooing. This had been strictly illegal during the Lomian reign but is one of the hidden customs they managed to keep. Now it became popular with people who were not Rooted as well, people who admired the pretty and powerful designs. The tattoos given to people outside the Rooted are very different than the ones they use themselves however, and it is highly looked down upon for a non-Rooted to have the kind of tattoos used in their culture. Especially if it is a Rooted themself who have made the tattoo. Very quickly, however, the Rooted also got quite the reputation of being amazing craftsmen. Smithing, woodwork, leatherwork, jewelry, tailoring; no matter what you wanted, the best to go to was always a Rooted. With their noticable tattoo designs they are easy to spot in the cities' trading and crafting districts.

Nice article, I like the importance of tattooing. Tattoos must also be seen as a symbol of freedom now that they're finally able to use them again, right?
Definitely. It has also been seen as a silent rebellion as they continued with their tattoos in secret (making them in places rarely seen etc.) even when they were enslaved. I should embellish on that.
