Red Granite

Properties

Material Characteristics

Red granite is a very hard type of rock with a distinct reddish colour. It is incredible hardy and take a very long time to erode. This, however, also means it is quite difficult to work with.

Physical & Chemical Properties

As most stone, red granite has the ability to store a lot of heat, though it takes it up slowly and releases it as slow. Buildings made of the material are usually easy to keep cool, as the sun's heat have a hard time penetrating the walls.

Geology & Geography

Red granite can be found mainly in eastern Tosormi, on the big peninsula there, as well as the islands off the eastern coast. It is believed these parts of Tosormi haven't always been connected to the rest of the land, which has decidedly little granite overall.

History & Usage

Cultural Significance and Usage

Red granite has, for as long as it has been used, been connected to the Three Deities of Death, as red is commonly seen as the colour of death. Its hardiness has also been seen as a sign of how the soul keep on existing even after death.   Even though it used to be hard to work with without modern tools, the granite has been used for worship of the Three. Early on it was mainly crafted into small stauettes and amuletts, made from small rocks already broken off from the cliffs. Later on, however, as technology made improvements to mining and building, the people started raising big temples in the red stone.   Ever since those early days it has been seen as very bad taste to use red granite for anything that isn't worship of the Three. Today it is officially illegal to do so, and the mining of red granite is heavily monitored.

I really like that it's illegal to use the red granite for non-religious purposes. Really adds to its significance. :)
