The Coin of Nik
This story takes place many centuries ago, way before the Lomians ever sat foot in Tosormi. This was a time where the Wanderers travelled freely across the land and needed not care if they crossed into someone's territory, and the Rooted lived in small villages surrounded by their fields. At this time there was a small village at the foot of a great mountain. The name of this village is long forgotten, and maybe it does not exist anymore. The mountain at which it lay was a firey one, it was known to spout clouds of ash into the sky when it got angry and it is said that it was once a child of the great Nik, she who controls the nature when nature rage. However, the mountains temper had never threatened the village before, for it was high enough that the ash got dispersed by the wind before it reached the village. But one time, at the time of this story, the mountain raged worse than ever. It set fire to the forests on its sides and ash fell on the village. Yet it seemed like this was just the start. The village got very frightened by this as they did not know what to do or if they had done anything wrong. Their priests asked the deities for guidance but got no answers. Instead, the answer came to an old woman in the village. At night, the deity Nik came to her and said: "My child is angry. Not at you, but at me. However, as with all children, they do not realize that their temper tantrum may affect others. Please, go out of your village and seek the biggest tree in the forest between you and my child. Under the tree, you shall find a single golden coin with my face on it. Present this coin to my child. Go up to him, until you come to the top. It will be open, and inside you will see fire. Throw the coin in the fire. This shall appease the child and he shall not spew the fire over your village." The woman knew at once that what she had seen in her sleep was true and she set out on the journey she had been assigned, together with her grandson as help. As they ventured, she found the coin just as she had seen in her dream, under the big tree. Then began the great trek up the mountain. It was not an easy journey as the ash clouds made it hard to breathe, and they had to dodge falling fire and rocks. Without the blessing of Nik, they would never have made it, that is for sure. What actually happened up on that mountain, we will never know, for neither the old woman nor her grandson every came back. But, just as Nik had said, the mountain ceased to rage and it has in fact never once gotten angry since. Many people have travelled to mountains thought to be the one in the story, in search of any traces of the woman and her grandson, and the coin they used, hoping it could be used to still yet another catastrophe somewhere. None of these expeditions have been fruitful.
