Cupid Fly

Cupid Flies are winged insectoid creatures capable of making anyone fall in love. They are potent and dangerous forces that create emotional imbalances in those inflicted by their curse of love.

Biology

Cupid Flies have bodies that, generally, resemble other flies. Their bodies are split into the head, thorax, and the abdomen. The species of cupid fly is pure white, and their compound eyes are made to see and aim perfectly.

Tooth of Love

Cupid Flies have mouths that are shaped like a bow, while they have one toothth which has a defined arrow-head shape that sticks out from the mouth. This arrow-like tooth can be shot out from the mouth at any target.   Anyone stuck with the tip of a Cupid Fly's "Tooth of Love" goes into a hallucinogenic state that causes them to fall in love with the first person they see afterwards for twenty-four hours. This manifests differently for some people. Some are willing to do anything, give anything away, go anywhere for their love while others act as if they are not in love but, if pursued, reveal their love.   The effect only lasts twenty-four hours, within which time the Tooth sucks up all other emotions and feelings. These feelings are eaten by the tooth, which is then transmitted through the air to the Cupid Fly for sustenance.

Habitats

Cupid Flies are said to congregate around civilization and any location where there are people capable of experiencing love.   It is said that the only place where sentient life exists that Cupid Flies do not is around the Zavese Collective, who are incapable of feeling love due to their hive mind.   Flies live wherever there is food, and Cupid Flies feed off of love. Therefore, settlements are feeding grounds for them.

Wings of an Angel

To fly around, Cupid Flies have what appear to be fluffy, angelic wings.

These wings, however, are not fluffy. They do not have feathers, they simply give the appearance that they do.   Cupid Fly wings are instead made of the same chitin as their bodies. The chitin is made to appear fluffier and more inviting so that one is tricked into being pricked by the Cupid Fly, or as many bards have taken to calling it:
"Being fooled by love."

Creation

Cupid Flies were made by Selene, Goddess of Love and the Moon. She is an archer, which is where the idea of "arrows of love" came from. The wings of the fly are based off of her idea of love being "angelic."   Selene wanted to show people the difference in what love is. She saw a very foundational view of love around people and wanted them to know of the fleeting nature that love can have. If they knew that, she believed that they could see how sacred true love can be.

Culture

The Cupid Fly has taken on many faces in the culture around the world. The most common one is that of "Cupid" the angel. This idea of Cupid is that of a small, baby-like angel that flies around and shoots people. This concept was created by those who dislike insects and wanted to, instead, have a more gentle face to the love it grants.   Selene detests the "Cupid" image because she says:
"Love is not always a gentle cherub. Love is sometimes ugly, sometimes it dies too early, and often does it present a false face. If one cannot accept that, then one cannot truly love, for one cannot see that within love is the purest form of hatred."
— Selene
The phrase "Fooled By Love" has been used often, particularly in a popular song sung by bards to sing of being scorned by love. The Cupid Flies are credited with creating the idea of false love, a love that is truly just a lie.   Here is an exceprt from the song:

Fooled By Love

I was a clown,
That's how it all goes.
I was feeling down,
By loves painful throes
Thought I would drown
Til you gave me that rose...   Now I'm no clown, but a fool.
I fell for a trick.
Oh, wasn't it quick!
I let myself be fooled by love!
