Wings of an Angel
To fly around, Cupid Flies have what appear to be fluffy, angelic wings.
Selene by Jarhed
These wings, however, are not fluffy. They do not have feathers, they simply give the appearance that they do.
Cupid Fly wings are instead made of the same chitin as their bodies. The chitin is made to appear fluffier and more inviting so that one is tricked into being pricked by the Cupid Fly, or as many bards have taken to calling it:
"Being fooled by love."
Creation
Cupid Flies were made by
Selene, Goddess of Love and the Moon. She is an archer, which is where the idea of "arrows of love" came from. The wings of the fly are based off of her idea of love being "angelic."
Selene wanted to show people the difference in what love is. She saw a very foundational view of love around people and wanted them to know of the fleeting nature that love can have. If they knew that, she believed that they could see how sacred true love can be.
Culture
The Cupid Fly has taken on many faces in the culture around the world. The most common one is that of "Cupid" the angel. This idea of Cupid is that of a small, baby-like angel that flies around and shoots people. This concept was created by those who dislike insects and wanted to, instead, have a more gentle face to the love it grants.
Selene detests the "Cupid" image because she says:
"Love is not always a gentle cherub. Love is sometimes ugly, sometimes it dies too early, and often does it present a false face. If one cannot accept that, then one cannot truly love, for one cannot see that within love is the purest form of hatred."— Selene
The phrase "Fooled By Love" has been used often, particularly in a popular song sung by bards to sing of being scorned by love. The Cupid Flies are credited with creating the idea of false love, a love that is truly just a lie.
Here is an exceprt from the song:
Fooled By Love
I was a clown,
That's how it all goes.
I was feeling down,
By loves painful throes
Thought I would drown
Til you gave me that rose...
Now I'm no clown, but a fool.
I fell for a trick.
Oh, wasn't it quick!
I let myself be fooled by love!
