Flame of Bortan

The Flame of Bortan is a flame-shaped crest of metal. It boosts the magical power of the wielder, as well as allowing them to channel weaker versions of the domain abilities of the God Phrixus's Holy Might.   It is one of many Mightems, or items that contain Holy Might, in Totania.

The Flame

The Flame of Bortan is a flat piece of orange metal. It is shaped like a tongue of flame, with black lines exentuating the shape. These black lines are actually pieces of metal, connecting three separate items together into the Flame.

Power

The Flame of Bortan carries with it a great power. It has been said to amplify the magical power of those that wield it. When asked how much it amplifies that power, magical scholars have answered
"What? That's not how magic works. There's no quantitative number for how good your magic is."

Iorbor

Despite this, many studies have tried to determine how strong someone gets from this. A famous experiment from a Yirthum Draconian known as Feldus Iorbor was done where he made statues with his earth magic. Then, he would see how much people could destroy it with a single spell. Then, he gave them the Flame of Bortan to see how much more of the statue they could then destroy.   The results of this study are believed to have been inconclusive, but it is unclear as Iorbor was killed by the Chief of Bortan before he could publish the results. The Chief was angry that Iorbor had stolen the Flame from Bortan.   However, since then, people have assumed the study was inconclusive. This has led to the phrase "Pulling an Iorbor" which means doing something over and over again and expecting a different result. It is believed to be a sign of insanity, especially among Draconians from villages like Yirthum or Tamd.

Bortan

Bortan is a militaristic village of Draconians, and the oldest of all the villages. The very first Draconian came from Bortan, though some disagreement caused the splintering that formed other villages like Evity.   After the split, Bortan exclusively followed Phrixus. It was one of the only villages to outright endorse Phrixus worship, whereas other villages instead either worshipped Helle only or worshipped Phrixus on the side.

Holy Might

The Flame of Bortan also allows the user to harness (albeit weaker versions of) the Holy Might of the God Phrixus.
Phrixus by Jarhed
Holy Might is the power of a God, the representation of the Domains which they reign over. It is a power they gain that is specifically related to that Domain. For instance, Phrixus has the Domains of Justice, Protection, Nobility, and Dragons. Therefore, he has those Holy Mights.   The Flame of Bortan wields most of those Holy Mights as well, with less power. However, it does not contain the Dragons ability.
  • Justice- Balances damage dealt in a fight. If they have taken more damage, they can instead give that damage to their opponent. The inverse is also true, if they so please, they can give themselves the damage the opponent has taken, evening the playing field.
  • Protection- Can create a shield in a radius of ten feet around themselves so that they can protect themselves and people near them. If someone they wish to protect is farther, users often give the Flame to those people temporarily so they can make the shields themselves.
  • Nobility- If afflicted by a status ailment, they are given a increased boost in power, beyond even the normal boost of the Flame.
These abilities are so powerful that many Chiefs of Bortan do not use it. They hold it in a chamber in Bortan, only to be used when it is absolutely needed. The Church of Phrixus has told them that it is not that sacred, that it can be used for more, yet many have simply not listened.

Creation

The Flame of Bortan was not initially a single item. It was once three separate items, each enchanted and blessed years apart by different Head Priests of Phrixus, who had studied enchantment for this purpose.   First, the crescent of Protection was made. This was meant to be a weaker form of Shield Magic, created when the Draconians under the first Grand Wizard, Kilprax Ildial, were at war with the Elves. With it, two separate Draconian warriors would be able to shield and protect civilians caught in the crossfires, or their own soldiers.   Then, the flame of Justice was made, a small tongue of flames (which would eventually be the foundation of the larger flame that made up the Flame of Bortan). This was made hundreds of years later as an attempt at something that could take out the fifth Grand Wizard, the Immortal Necromancer, Nawunax Valdacmith. Nawunax so easily defeated his foes that it was believed that sacrificing oneself to deal the same amount of damage to him would at least help the cause.   Finally, the piece of Nobility does not have a specific name. This piece was created with the intention that it would, eventually, be joined together with the others. Its Holy Might was not believed to be something that could necessarily stand on its own. This was made during the Grand Wizard Struggle, where Draconians were seeking out more power, though it would not be unified for nearly 200 years after its creation.

Unification

In 267, Myilthusuc Faerbor, a Draconian Enchanter from Yirthum, worked together with a Dwarven smith named Rotrom to piece the Flame of Bortan together. She then posed as a Bortanian, knowing that if she were to use an enchanted item and claim to be from Yirthum, she would not be special.   She became the 28th Grand Wizard, and with the Flame remained in that position for eleven years before eventually being deposed. The Flame was then "returned" to Bortan, where it has held a sacred place due to its blessings from three separate Head Priests of Phrixus, and its holding of his Holy Might.
