Forbidden Magic

Forbidden Magic is a catch-all term for an outdated classification of magical arts and techniques that have had limitations or bans imposed on them throughout history. Many consider this classification to be behind the times, as people practice all of these freely despite most still being considered forbidden.

Classification

There are many arts that are considered under the umbrella term of forbidden magic.   They are listed as follows in the official Decree of Forbidden Magics:
  • Necromancy- The art of raising, contorting, and controlling the dead.
  •
  • Puppetry- The art of controlling people and objects with strings or other magical creations.
  •
  • Druidry- The art of toying with and exerting ones will over nature.
  •
  • Beastmastery- The art of controlling innocent animals.
  •
  • Alchemy- The art of brewing potions and transmuting elements from their natural state.
  •
  • Enchantment- The art of enhancing things with magic. Particularly the enchantment of people rather than objects was banned, forcing them to bend to the will of the user, is forbidden, while enchantment of objects is encouraged and allowed.
  •
  • Divination- The art of viewing and changing the future.

The Forbidden Village

Evity is a Draconian village most often credited with normalizing forbidden magics thanks to Kilprax Ildial's influence.   Once upon a time, they simply dedicated themselves to magic. They had learned vaguely of Kath the Eternal's "forbidden magic" term and decided to follow it.   Kilprax Ildial, upon taking power, convinced the Evitians to look into forbidden magic, which then led to them leaning into it as a village identity, mostly necromancy, and becoming known as the Forbidden Village.   With Evitians being a major number of the Draconian population, these forbidden arts became much more normal.
Divination is one of few magical arts that are still largely considered taboo even in Draconian territories like Evity, as it is said that messing with fate and the future can have negative effects on the lives of people.   Alchemy was removed from the list of forbidden magic when Colmiceth Nurdesh formed the village of Tamd to study it. It was still largely frowned upon, but it was not a forbidden art.

Origins

The Golden Dragon Lord known as Kath the Eternal was the first person on the planet to use magic, as the first living creature to roam Totania. He discovered everything it had to offer and set himself some boundaries and parameters of what he felt comfortable using and what he would refrain from.   When other sentient beings arrived on Totania, he passed on these ideas as rules known as the Decree of Forbidden Magics, saying that if they wished for a peaceful civilization, they would forbid these specific magical arts.   The decree also mentioned ethical ways to use some of these arts, though it was only Enchantment, Alchemy, Puppetry, and Druidry that were ever considered ethical, and only if never used on living beings.   Kath, being the oldest and wisest creature, was listened to by many, but Kilprax Ildial, first Grand Wizard of the Draconians, snuck behind Kath's back and let his people practice the forbidden arts. It was Kilprax's example and study of these arts that then led to their being popularized around the world ever since, as Kilprax said:
"It is childish to forbid progress. We have gone beyond ancient times, so we must continue growing and learning. We are not savages, we know how to use our magic."
— Kilprax Ildial
