Honey-Glazed Cheese

Honey-Glazed Cheese is a travel dish, introduced to the world by Detser Gnomes, which preserves the meal well over long distances and makes even cheese taste sweeter.

A Well Preserved Meal

Deep in the Uncharted Desert, techniques had been developed with the aid of magic to grow all kinds of crops, and due to this food was not difficult to get for those on the outskirts of the region, but the Detser Gnomes in the farthest points of the desert still struggled.   It was far too hot for most foods to be preserved, and while they could sustain crops and thus keep livestock, they needed to eat it rather quickly for it to be good.   In particular, cheese was difficult to keep for long. It could be kept in places within the desert, but for travel, no cheese could accompany anyone on the journey because it would melt in the sun and spoil.

An Added Sweetener

It is unknown where it began and who was the first to do it, but slowly, a tradition began to develop from the Detser Gnomes that would travel around the Uncharted Desert. They began to add an ingredient over their cheese: honey.

Different Cheeses

The technique that goes into making honey-glazed cheese is not used for only one kind of cheese.   Instead, many varieties of cheese, particularly regional cheeses from the Uncharted Desert and surrounding cultures, are used in making honey-glazed cheese.   A non-comprehensive list includes:
  • Halloumi
  •
  • Testouri
  •
  • Ackawi
  •
  • Jibneh Arabieh
  •
  • Feta
Cattle are not commonly found in the desert, so most of this comes from goat or sheep milk.   The primary uses of this technique use halloumi or ackawi, but Feta is a popular cheese that is, of course, beloved by all.
Due to the isolation of the Detser Gnomes in the desert, the specifics of how it was introduced were unknown, but the tale of how it spread is much clearer due to it being carried by the merchants who spread it.   Subhi Cauri was a Detser Gnome food and spice merchant, one of the early adopters of the technique, is credited with the popularity of the honey-glaze. It is said that he would glaze the cheese at his cart in the bazaars, enticing passers-by to come and look at the unique treat he had. Other travelers largely kept it to themselves, as a secret to preserving food, but Cauri became famous for making it the key of his marketing.   Soon, it caught on like wildfire. It started in the Detser Gnome settlements, as Subhi introduced it as a way to beat the heat. Eventually, he brought it outside to Lebalos and other predominantly Secci Gnome settlements, and from there, it spread throughout the hottest regions of Elone and, soon, the world.   It is now not just used by merchants in the desert, but travelers all over the world, and just those looking for a delicacy from a distant land.
